They committed no crime, but Hayam El Gamal and her five children have personally experienced all the abuses the Department of Homeland Security is accused of in its anti-immigration campaign. After spending more than 10 months detained, they hold the record for the longest time spent during Donald Trump’s presidency at the Dilley Detention Center in Texas, which has faced numerous complaints of inhumane conditions. The crime for which they were imprisoned was not committed by them, but by their father, from whom El Gamal is now divorced.

In 2021, Miriam González, a 35-year-old from Murcia, Spain, went to the doctor because she was bleeding from her breast. She was told to relax: everything was normal. But in 2024, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. And, shortly afterward, she discovered it was metastatic, at stage four.

“You want oil to live above $60, but below $90.” This line is uttered by Tommy Norris, the character played by Billy Bob Thornton in the popular TV series Landman. One of Paramount’s most successful productions, it’s based on the adventures of oil workers in Texas. “But don’t get me wrong,” Thornton continues, “we’re still printing money at $90, but [when] gas gets up over $3.50 a gallon, it starts to pinch.”

Juan Espinoza spent nearly eight years rebuilding his life in the United States. When he arrived in Austin, he knew he had left behind in Caracas his position as manager, which he had held for 20 years, and that now he would have to take any job that would allow him to support his family. That job was driving trucks. In February 2020, he legally obtained his commercial driver’s license in Texas.
