SIBU, May 10 — An elderly woman was killed in an accident involving a 4WD vehicle and an SUV at Km17.7 of Jalan Sibu-Selangau along the Pan Borneo Highway last night.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre spokesman said the 66-year-old victim, who was trapped in the front passenger seat of the SUV, died on the spot.

He said the department received an emergency call at 9.49 pm, and a team from the Sungai Merah station was dispatched to the scene.

“The woman was found unconscious and still trapped in the front passenger seat, while two other passengers sustained injuries and the driver was unhurt. All the victims were aged between 56 and 76.

“The male driver and three female passengers of the 4WD were also unhurt,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the victim’s body was later handed over to the police for further action. — Bernama

KOTA TINGGI, May 9 — Two foreign nationals were killed in a horrific single-vehicle crash after the Ferrari they were traveling in caught fire along the Johor Bahru-Mersing highway this morning.

Kota Tinggi District Police Chief, Superintendent Yusof bin Haji Othman, confirmed that police received a distress call from the public at approximately 9am, regarding the fatal incident at Kilometer 57.5 of the Jalan Johor Bahru-Mersing route.

The victims have been identified as a 34-year-old man, Yeo Tian Wen Leong, who was driving the vehicle, and a 33-year-old woman, Ng Puay Ying who was in the front passenger seat.

According to the police statement, both the driver and the passenger suffered severe bodily injuries and burns in the crash. They were pronounced dead at the scene. 

The bodies of both victims have been transported to the Forensic Unit of Kota Tinggi Hospital for post-mortem examinations as part of the investigation procedures. 

The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. 

Under this section, those convicted face a prison term of between five and ten years, a fine ranging from RM20,000 to RM50,000, and the disqualification from holding a driver’s license for a minimum period of five years.

In light of the tragedy, the Kota Tinggi District Police Headquarters has urged the public to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to traffic laws and regulations at all times to ensure mutual safety on the roads.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — Police arrested two foreigners after a high-speed chase ended with their car crashing along Jalan Johor near Pavilion Damansara Heights early yesterday morning.

Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Shamsudin Mamat said that the police tried to stop a Honda City that was heading to the capital along the Federal Highway for inspection at 2.15 am but the car sped away, leading to a high speed chase along the Sprint Highway, where the car skidded and crashed into a signboard at the U-turn as it was headed to Kuala Lumpur.

“The police arrested the male driver and a woman passenger, both foreigners in their 20s at the crash, while another suspect managed to run away.

“Further checks of the car did not reveal any suspicious materials such as drugs or dangerous weapons,” he said in a statement yesterday, adding that the two suspects, who did not possess any prior criminal records, have been remanded for a day.

Checks also revealed that the car is registered under the name of a local man and had not been reported missing.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a civil servant from discharging their duties and Section 279 of the Penal Code for reckless driving ​on public roads.
