One thing we're not going to do: we're not going to cold call.

Business expert Matthew Rechs, in his blog post "Making your network work," makes that abundantly clear.

He says you should make lists of people you know, and people you admire, and begin reaching out to them with very personalized messages, thoughtful messages. It's your best shot.

You might do the outreach on LinkedIn, or you might try SMS if you have their phone numbers. There's 2025 data that people significantly respond to - prefer even - SMS over email, especially when it feels personalized, which your outreach would be.

The Introverted Networker agrees that starting with a good list is the way to go, then branching out from there, noting that the "principles of building and maintaining the list remain the same," from an old-school Rolodex to a high-tech CRM of today.

Not everyone will respond but some will. As Rechs says:

Remember that quitting is the only way to fail. All other paths — other habits and practices that put you in touch with people who can support your career and business growth — will eventually lead to success.

Think about it from your own perspective. When you hear from someone you haven't heard from in a while:

  1. How does that make you feel?
  2. Do you have the urge to help them?
  3. Are you willing to hear them out?
  4. What do you need to hear to want to help them more?

Hand of man typing text on mobile smartphone www.allbusiness.com

You also need to realize that everyone has a limited amount of time in their day and you may simply reach someone at the wrong time. That's OK. It happens. And finally, don't use AI. Absolutely don't use AI. Rechs is fiery about that and I agree. It's relatively easy to detect. You lose the personal touch.

KANGAR, June 3 — The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, wants Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah to be given the space to continue leading the state administration until the end of the current Perlis State Assembly term without any interference.

His Royal Highness said political stability is a crucial factor that will influence investors’ confidence to invest in the state.

As such, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin called on all state assemblymen to set aside their egos and extend full and continuous cooperation to Abu Bakar for the benefit of the people and the state.

“I wish to remind all Honourable Members that this is my government. Therefore, I hope that the Menteri Besar will be given the space to continue leading until the end of the 15th Perlis State Legislative Assembly term without any interference that could disrupt the plans that have been put in place.

“All Honourable Members are reminded to prioritise the interests of the people over personal interests,” he said in his royal address at the opening of the fourth term of the 15th Perlis State Legislative Assembly sitting at Kompleks Seri Putra here today.

His royal address was delivered on his behalf by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said differences in political views should not become a barrier or obstacle to sincere efforts to bring development and investment into the state.

The Ruler also said that the state government must always maintain good relations with the federal government, particularly in terms of development and various forms of support for the benefit of the people of Perlis.

“I commend the series of visits and courtesy calls made by the Menteri Besar to various ministries to strengthen cooperation between the state and federal governments.

“I hope that these noble efforts will continue to be enhanced and sustained to ensure that the state’s development agenda can be implemented smoothly and effectively,” he said. — Bernama

Police said on Wednesday they received a tip-off that a flat in Tsuen Wan’s Lei Muk Shue Estate was suspected of being used as a drug manufacturing and storing facility.

Officers of the Kowloon City district special team conducted an anti-drug operation on Tuesday and raided the flat, the force said.

Police deployed to the estate stopped a 39-year-old woman after she stepped out of her flat. She was found with six e-cigarette capsules containing suspected etomidate and was arrested, police said.

Two more women, aged 29 and 35, were arrested inside the flat, where “a large amount” of capsules containing suspected etomidate was discovered, police said.

Officers also found 28 bottles of suspected etomidate liquid, about 300 grams of powdered etomidate, and drug-making tools such as pots and electronic scale.

The three women were charged with one count each of manufacturing and trafficking a dangerous drug, while the 39-year-old faces another count of possession of a dangerous drug.

The trio will be brought to the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on Thursday, police said.

Police warned manufacturing drugs is a serious offence with a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life behind bars.

Etomidate, previously called “space oil,” is a drug that has gained popularity among teenagers in recent years. Authorities said in March that, since the first quarter of 2025, etomidate has overtaken cannabis and cocaine as the most common type of substance abused by young people under the age of 21.

The government began referring to space oil as etomidate last July, saying that the renaming would reduce its appeal.

Authorities added etomidate to the Dangerous Drug Ordinance last year, putting it in the same ranks as ketamine and cocaine.

In November 2025, Cyclone Senyar generated extreme rainfall in parts of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggering thousands of landslides. Our new paper in the journal Current Biology demonstrates that these landslides might have a devastating impact on a critically endangered population of Tapanuli orangutan.

In November 2025, Cyclone Senyar brought extreme rainfall to large parts of Sumatra in Indonesia. I have written about this on previous occasions – the rainfall triggered vast numbers of landslides.

In my line of work, we often focus on the landslide impacts on the landscape, on human lives and on infrastructure. We rarely consider the impacts on th eanimal population. This is certainly a weakness that the Cyclone Senyar event brings to focus.

Part of the area devastated by the landslides is that slopes around the Batang Toru rover, an area of forest that is home to a rare species of orangutang. These great apes, Pongo tapanuliensis, live in a habitat known as the West Block of Tapanuli. There are only 800 individuals left in the wild, a situation that is highly precarious. The loss of even a small number of adults could tip the species towards extinction.

I was a part of a consortium of scientists that considered the landslide impacts of Cyclone Senyar on the habitat of these orangutangs. The results have just been published in the journal Current Biology (Meijaard et al. 2026) – the paper is open access and published under a creative commons license.

This image, from the paper, shows the landslide impacts of Cyclone Senyar:-

Before and after satellite imagery of the impacts of Cyclone Senyar.
Before and after satellite imagery of the impacts of Cyclone Senyar. From: Meijaard et al. (2026).

In the study area of 71,161 hectares, the mapping indicates that there were 50, 185 individual landslides, covering a surface area of 8,303 hectares. This is about 11% of the forested area. We then estimate the likely loss of the orangutang population, which is likely to be in the range of 18-120 individuals, with a central estimate of 58 individuals. This is likely to have been a devastating loss for this highly endangered population.

This level of habitat loss might also be placing a severe pressure on the remaining population, so further fatalities are very possible through, for example, reduced food availability.

The intensity of the rainfall was almost certainly supercharged by climate change. The impacts of Cyclone Senyar are being replicated widely – and of course we are now in the northern hemisphere tropical cyclone season again.

Our paper makes some policy recommendations for this population of orangutans. First, the government of Indonesia needs to permanently protect this area of forest against mining , palm oil and hydropower developments. Ideally, the protected area should be expanded. Second, Indonesia needs support for biodiversity-recovery, hazard forecasting and ecological restoration planning.

International calls for US-Cuba de-escalation grow amid latest threats

20 April 2026 at 16:35

The leaders of Mexico, Spain and Brazil called for Cuba’s sovereignty to be respected as it continues to face threats by Washington.

The joint statement came during a meeting of left-wing leaders in Spain and also vowed to send humanitarian aid to the crisis-ridden island.

The plea comes as the President Donald Trump administration ratchets up punitive measures on the communist-run island in the hopes of forcing political regime change.

“We express our deep concern regarding the serious humanitarian crisis the Cuban people faces … [and] we reiterate the need to respect at all times international law and the principles of territorial integrity, sovereign equality and the peaceful settlement of disputes”, said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva in a joint statement on Saturday.

Although the U.S. was not directly mentioned, the plea appears to be aimed at the White House as tensions rise between the two neighbors. Since news broke on Wednesday that the Pentagon is ramping up preparations for an operation against Cuba, a U.S. Navy surveillance drone has been observed flying over Cuba’s coast for several hours and Trump has promised that “a new dawn for Cuba” is imminent.

Hope for a peaceful solution, however, remains. Havana and Washington are currently engaged in official diplomatic negotiations; a U.S. government delegation visited Havana earlier in April, marking the first visit of an official U.S. government plane since former President Barack Obama’s trip in 2016.

The U.S. delegation reportedly informed their Cuban counterparts that they saw an end to political repression, the liberation of high-profile political prisoners and economic liberalization as prerequisites for easing the longstanding economic and commercial embargo on the island.

These sanctions, which have historically been condemned by the vast majority of the international community at the United Nations General Assembly, have caused far-reaching material shortages on the island and hindered the island’s ability to engage in international trade and commerce, according to UN experts.

Recently, the U.S. intensified sanctions, declaring Cuba a national security threat and blockading the vast majority of oil destined for the island, which is now facing an acute humanitarian and economic crisis as a result of the intensified measures.

Sheinbaum, Lula and Sánchez’s promise of support represents the latest in a series of international offers and shipments of aid. Sheinbaum’s own government has already sent humanitarian shipments to the island, and the Chinese, Chilean and Canadian administrations have also sent or pledged to send aid to the island.

Furthermore, a civilian humanitarian aid mission to Cuba, which brought food, medicine and solar equipment to the island, was organized in March.
