Mitch ⁠McConnell, a US senator ⁠from Kentucky, was admitted ​to β€Œthe β€Œhospital β€Œon Sunday morning, β€Œa ​spokesperson ⁠said ​in ​a statement.

β€œSenator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” the statement read.

Excitement is mounting in Mexico as the World Cup opens in Mexico City, then heads to the city of Guadalajara.

Mexican journalist Leon Krauze is a fan. He was there the last time the World Cup came to Mexico and will be watching again. The city of Guadalajara has a mythical footballing past: β€œPele’s Brazil played there in 1970, then Zico and Socrates played there in 1986. There is a real football memory there, a love affair between Guadalajara and football in general, and I expect it to be a wonderful party.”

G7 leaders to meet in Γ‰vian-les-Bains in France later today to discuss the most pressing issues, including Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran

European Commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen, does not seem to be particularly convinced by the Russian explanations though.

Posting ahead of the G7 summit, she said:

β€œWe will discuss the next steps to increase pressure on Russia, bring Putin to the negotiating table, and end this senseless killing.

Europe wants peace. Nobody more than the Ukrainian people. Russia, on the other hand, showed again its sole interest in violence and destruction.”

A wave of US strikes represents the gravest test yet of the fragile truce. Here’s what happened, what officials are saying and whether the deal can survive

The US has launched strikes across southern Iran for a second consecutive day. Although there have been several breaches since a ceasefire was agreed between the two sides in April, the attacks this week – launched after the downing of a US helicopter over the strait of Hormuz – represent the most serious and extensive breakdown of the truce to date.

The US president, Donald Trump, has raised the prospect of further attacks, while his defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, has told reporters if strikes β€œhave to happen [Friday] night, they will be strong and they will be clear”.
