Cap of 20mph in towns and cities and 60mph on motorways would cut fuel demand and combat rising prices, IPPR says

Britain should lower speed limits for drivers as part of a package of measures to reduce the impact of the Iran war on consumers, a thinktank has said.

Capping legal speeds at 20mph in towns and cities and 60mph on motorways would help reduce fuel demand and combat soaring oil prices triggered by conflict, according to the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).

Selangor FC edge Nam Dinh 2-1 to take slim lead into ACC semi-final second leg

Malay Mail

PETALING JAYA, May 7 — Selangor FC holds a slim advantage heading into the away leg after defeating Vietnamese representative Nam Dinh FC 2-1 in the first leg of the 2025/2026 Asean Club Championship (ACC) semi-final at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Stadium last night.

This result means that the “Red Giants” squad, coached by Kim Pan Gon, must at least maintain their momentum and avoid defeat in the return leg at Thien Truong Stadium in Vietnam next Wednesday to confirm their place in the final.

Both teams displayed energetic performances from the opening whistle, but Selangor controlled the game more effectively and created several early opportunities that tested the visitors’ defence.

Selangor’s opening goal came in the 37th minute when a low cross from Quentin Cheng was successfully finished by Chrigor Moraes to put the hosts in front.

However, Nam Dinh managed to equalise when Van Vi Nguyen scored towards the end of the first half, making it 1-1 before both teams headed to their respective dressing rooms.

Once the second half resumed, Selangor reorganised their rhythm by increasing the intensity of their attacks and Moraes proved decisive once again, scoring his second goal in the 58th minute with a chip shot after receiving an accurate pass from Quentin.

Nam Dinh attempted to fight back in search of an equaliser through several quick counter-attacks, but Selangor’s defensive line remained disciplined, closing down the space and absorbing the pressure until the final whistle. — Bernama

BAM fires back at claims Malaysia lacks singles talent after Thomas Cup setback

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has rejected claims that the national governing body lacks talented singles players.

The allegation was raised by several parties following the disappointing performance of BAM’s men’s singles players at the recent Thomas Cup.

BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh said the governing body actually has talented players in the individual events, but the squad has at times been unfortunate due to injuries.

“I do not agree when people say we (BAM) lack talent. Perhaps we have just been unfortunate in the singles events because we already have the talent, but then injuries happen.

“You all know how many players are injured, while some are still recovering and others have only just recovered. So I don’t think we lack talent; we have just been unlucky in that aspect,” he said when met yesterday.

Meanwhile, Kenny said that, to ensure BAM does not run short of new talent, the governing body’s talent scouts continuously monitor various national tournaments throughout the year.

He added that, besides monitoring national tournaments, BAM also conducts Talent Identification selections at least twice a year to ensure the country’s best players can be identified and absorbed into BAM’s development system. — Bernama

Over 50,000 BTS fans mob Mexico's presidential palace for K-pop group’s appearance

Malay Mail

MEXICO CITY, May 7 — Around 50,000 fans of K-pop superstars BTS gathered outside Mexico’s National Palace on Wednesday to get a look at the group, who waved to the crowd from a balcony after meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum.

BTS will perform shows in Mexico City on May 7, 9, and 10, with more than 135,000 tickets for the stadium showcase getting snapped up in a matter of minutes.

The group returned to the world spotlight in March after an almost four-year pause so its members could carry out their obligatory military service.

Kim Nam-joon, one of the members of the group, said to the crowd in Spanish: “I love you, I adore you. Thank you very much!”

“I already told them they have to come back next year,” Sheinbaum said, later posting a photo with the group and holding their latest album “ARIRANG.”

Lizeth Zarate, a coordinator for the Zocalo – Mexico City’s main square located in front of the presidential palace – said the Wednesday crowd was around 50,000.

“They’re my whole world,” Estefany Victoriano, a 25-year-old secretary, told AFP.

Another onlooker, 18-year-old Zoe Perez, was on the verge of tears.

“I’m speechless, and it’s a very beautiful feeling to see them in person. Since I couldn’t get tickets, well, it makes me a little emotional,” she said. — AFP
