Hong Kong is mulling tighter health checks for elderly taxi drivers, but progress has been slow.

Currently, all drivers – including taxi drivers – aged over 70 must provide the Transport Department with a medical examination certificate completed by a registered medical practitioner at least once every three years.

The government proposed in 2023 that taxi drivers aged over 65 should conduct mandatory health checks every year.

The government is working on law amendments related to mandatory health checks for taxi drivers and plans to table the bill later this year, Sing Tao Daily reported on Wednesday.

Meta AI support bot allowed hackers access to Instagram accounts just by simply asking, say researchers

2 June 2026 at 08:01

Malay Mail

NEW YORK, June 2 — Meta is facing scrutiny after security researchers found that its AI‑powered support chatbot could be manipulated to grant unauthorised access to Instagram accounts.

Futurism reported that multiple users and cybersecurity researchers demonstrated how Meta’s automated support agent — designed to help with account recovery — could be tricked into handing over access links simply by claiming to be the account owner. In several documented cases, the bot allegedly provided password‑reset or login‑recovery URLs without verifying the requester’s identity.

According to the report, the vulnerability allowed attackers to bypass standard security checks, including two‑factor authentication, by exploiting the chatbot’s willingness to accept unverified claims. Screenshots shared by researchers showed the bot responding with recovery links after minimal prompting.

Meta told Futurism that it had taken action to address the issue, but did not specify what changes were made. The company also said it had not found evidence of “widespread abuse,” though researchers quoted in the article argued that the flaw was significant and easily exploitable.

Cybersecurity analysts warned that the incident highlights broader risks in deploying AI systems for sensitive support functions without robust verification safeguards. Some experts said the case underscores how AI‑driven customer service tools can unintentionally create new attack surfaces if not properly secured.

The report noted that several affected Instagram users have since regained control of their accounts.

Cuba hopes for World Cup respite from US sabre-rattling – but prepares for the worst

With some matches being held in nearby Miami, a Cuban response to US military action could mar the tournament

As Cuba crumbles under a nearly five-month-long US oil blockade, many on the island hope that the World Cup might save the island from US attack – or at least offer a respite until the competition ends on 19 July.

“The beginning of the World Cup will make it more difficult for the United States to carry out a military action in Cuba,” said Carlos Alzugaray, Cuba’s former ambassador to the EU. “Cuba is very close to the US, and can hit many targets inside the US, especially in south Florida, with drones or other weapons.”

Turkey steps up as Europe's indispensable and uncomfortable defence partner

26 April 2026 at 15:53
Europe is turning to Turkey to fill the security vacuum left by an increasingly unreliable United States. But as Nato's secretary-general was praising Ankara's growing military role this week, the European Commission president was placing Turkey in the same bracket as China and Russia. The contradiction points to a dilemma that is only going to deepen.

Singapore man charged after allegedly driving against traffic, speeding, hitting school bus and lamp post before car caught fire

18 June 2026 at 09:11

Malay Mail

SINGAPORE, June 18 — A 29‑year‑old man is accused of driving against traffic, speeding at more than 110kmh, crashing into a school bus and a lamp post, and abandoning his burning car after the collision.

Court documents cited by the Straits Times state that Aaron Tan Yao Cong refused to take a breathalyser test when police arrested him.

Tan was later found to have 148 milligrams (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, almost double the legal limit of 80mg, according to the charge sheets.

He had a previous conviction for drink driving and driving without due care and attention in 2019.

Prosecutors charged Tan on June 18 with drink driving, dangerous driving causing hurt, leaving his vehicle in a dangerous position, failing to cooperate with a breathalyser test, and driving against the flow of traffic.

He is scheduled to return to court on July 16 and has not indicated whether he intends to plead guilty to any of the five charges.

The incident occurred on March 6, 2024, when Tan allegedly ignored a straight‑only sign on Cavenagh Road at about 5.50am and instead took a left bend into oncoming traffic before stopping on the left lane towards Buyong Road, according to the charge sheets.

Police said in a June 17 statement that officers approached the car at 6am, but Tan sped off and was later seen racing along Bukit Timah Road towards Upper Bukit Timah Road at an average speed of 114kmh while weaving through traffic between Coronation Road and Anamalai Avenue.

At the junction of Sixth Avenue, Tan allegedly ran a red light and collided with a private bus that was making a U‑turn.

He then struck a lamp post, causing his car to catch fire, and escaped the burning vehicle with three passengers.

The collision left two children aged nine and 10 on the bus requiring medical attention.

Paramedics took Tan, his passengers, the bus driver and the children to hospital.

Tan faces up to two years’ jail and a fine of up to S$20,000 (RM63,786) if convicted of repeat drink driving.

He also faces up to two years’ jail, a fine of up to S$10,000 or both for dangerous driving causing hurt, with higher penalties for repeat offenders.

Allowing a vehicle to remain in a dangerous position carries up to three months’ jail, a fine of up to S$1,000 or both.

Failing to provide a breath specimen carries up to six months’ jail, a fine of up to S$5,000 or both, with heavier penalties for repeat offenders.

Driving against traffic carries up to three months’ jail, a fine of up to S$1,000 or both, with increased penalties for repeat offenders.

According to CBC, Japanese police received a report on Sunday that a 22-year-old man, who lived in Tokyo, and a 30-year-old man were stuck on Mount Okuhotaka – the highest peak of the Hida Mountains – in Gifu Prefecture due to poor weather conditions.

The two were reportedly trapped at a 3,163-metre rocky ridge known as “Gendarme,” located west of the Mount Okuhotaka summit.

Earlier search and rescue operations were called off due to persistent bad weather, CBC reported. “A search operation by a Nagano Prefecture disaster relief helicopter began this morning, and both individuals were recovered by 3pm,” it said.

The 30-year-old was sent to hospital in a conscious state and survived, but the 22-year-old was pronounced dead.

Some Threads users said on Monday that two Hong Kong residents were stranded in the Hida Mountains, also known as the Northern Japan Alps, the city’s local media said on Tuesday.
