Rumors about an American Psycho remake may persist, but until that classic film gets its official reboot treatment, there’s another Bret Easton Ellis project in the works. The author’s 2023 book, The Shards—his first novel in 13 years following 2010’s Imperial Bedrooms—has been adapted into an FX series by Ryan Murphy.

The highly metafictional novel, which imagines a fictionalized version of Ellis as a teenager in 1980s Los Angeles at the center of a series of disturbing murders, was originally released by Ellis as a serialized audiobook on his Patreon. Following the novel's publication, it was set to be adapted into an HBO series, with Luca Guadagnino directing (the Call Me By Your Name filmmaker is also reportedly attached to the American Psycho remake). But after Ellis had a falling out with the network over creative differences, Murphy signed on as Ellis’s new co-creator. Here’s everything we know so far:

Who is in the cast of The Shards?

The cast of the 10-episode series features some newer faces alongside recurring Ryan Murphy players. Igby Rigney will play Ellis, while Richard Gere’s son, Homer Gere—currently making his mark on another gritty teen drama with Euphoria—will play antagonist Robert. (It’s a fitting casting, given that Ellis has frequently spoken of the influence Gere’s American Gigolo character had on his work). The main cast is rounded out by Graham Campbell, Hayes Warner and Wes Bentley, with Kaia Gerber, Evan Rachel Wood, Jordan Roth, Owen Painter, and Daniel Dale in the supporting ensemble.

What will the plot of The Shards be?

Assuming the series sticks to the novel’s general structure, The Shards will tell the dark coming-of-age tale of a fictionalized, 17-year-old Ellis as he tries to determine the identity of a serial killer targeting classmates and families at his privileged prep school. The killer, known as “The Trawler,” plucks off members of Ellis’s elite inner circle one by one in increasingly disturbing ways. Set in 1981 Los Angeles among the children of Hollywood’s upper crust of directors, producers, and writers, The Shards is considered a thematic and tonal return to Ellis’s Less Than Zero and the nihilistic work that first made him a literary darling. With Murphy’s touch, the series is set up to be particularly gruesome.

How I applied the product depended entirely on my day’s activities, and that’s what made the foundation such a standout. For the beach, I skipped an all-over base and used my fingers to tap it only where I needed coverage—around redness, a few dark spots, and uneven areas. It blended nicely into bare skin and stayed put without looking obvious or heavy.

For daytime exploring and hikes, I sheered it out by applying a few drops to the center of my face with a damp makeup sponge, pressing and bouncing it outward for a lightweight, even finish. At night, I switched to a larger foundation buffing brush, layering thin coats where I wanted more coverage and lightly buffing for a smooth, polished look. No matter the tool—brush, sponge, or fingers—it blended seamlessly, never streaked, and built beautifully without caking, making it easy to tailor the finish from barely there to nighttime-ready in seconds.

In a climate that doesn’t forgive heavy formulas or weak wear time, this foundation proved it could handle real heat, humidity, and movement without looking heavy at all.

We wouldn’t call the all-black set Kaia Gerber wore to the Disney Upfronts in New York City method dressing per se. Though the subtly sensual black outfit and her “just back from vacation” glam certainly fits the mood of an ’80s Los Angeles–set horror series. A perfect little style amuse bouche for the project she was there to promote: FX’s hotly anticipated series adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel The Shards.

Appearing with costars Homer Gere (yes, the son of Richard Gere) and Igby Rigney, Gerber wore a matte black ensemble from Jacquemus. Her look consisted of a two-toned pencil skirt and long-sleeved crop top with a low-cut, squared neckline. A closer look proved the set was actually paneled with black velvet, creating a shadowy effect.

It hailed from the label’s fall 2026 “Le Palmier” collection, inspired by creative director Simon Porte Jaquemus’s early career days in Paris, 1990s’ sex appeal, and 1950s’ couture designs. With its dark color, skin-baring design, and smooth texture, the set fully embodied all of these references on the red carpet. To finish her look, Gerber slipped on a pair of smooth black mules, accentuated by a lightly tousled hairstyle and glossy, dusky pink lip gloss.

In The Shards, Ellis took an autofiction approach to reimagine his days as a high school senior in 1981 Los Angeles as a serial killer horror story. Originally published in 2023, it was acknowledged by fans and critics to be the American Psycho author’s best work in years. Hollywood quickly became interested in an adaptation, with Ryan Murphy eventually winning the rights. The series finished production in March, and it’s all but officially confirmed to air sometime this fall on FX.

Gerber has largely reinvented herself as an actress with roles in Palm Royale and Mother Mary. Though her exact role in the series is still unknown, it’s believed to be a major part.

Dua Lipa’s just discovered the term “funmaxxing”—but it’s obvious the star’s been doing it for quite some time. With a maximalist fashion streak that’s packed with sultry and archival pieces, Lipa has clearly resonated with the term when she defined it in a recent Instagram caption. “Funmaxxing is an internet slang term describing the practice of intentionally maximizing enjoyment,” she wrote. The accompanying full lace ensemble featured in the post certainly fit the bill.

While posing with a margarita, Lipa enjoyed golden hour in a plunging black lace minidress. The swirling piece featured a floral pattern and flared sleeves for a romantic, bohemian flair. To further elevate her sultry number, the singer laced into a pair of Christian Louboutin’s sheer black KM Lace Botta boots for a monochrome cutout finish. Her look was completed with a glittering Bulgari diamond necklace and rings, plus—in true Lipa fashion—a shoulder bag covered in a golden leopard print.

However, this wasn’t Lipa’s only funmaxxing moment while enjoying the early days of summer. The star also snapped photos with pals, including Simon Porte Jacquemus, as she sparkled in a white lace miniskirt, sequin-fringed halter bralette, and linear diamond earrings.

Rounding out her funcentric range, Lipa snapped nighttime photos in a gauzy, belted black minidress and boxy leather boots. Large gold hoop earrings, a gleaming Bulgari Serpenti bangle, diamond rings, and Chloé necklaces accented with sunflower, seashell, and beaded charms brought her ensemble a free-spirited touch. As a Chanel ambassador under Matthieu Blazy, she also carried a sunny yellow latticework version of the French brand’s flap bag—which just walked the label’s Cruise 2027 show in Biarritz.

From full lace to breezy boho vibes, Lipa certainly aced a funmaxxing trend with flying colors. Indeed, with a repertoire including a flaming hot Chanel skirt suit, Chloé’s swan-shaped purse, and fluffy “mob wife” shearling, were you surprised? Call it fashionably radical optimism.

Ever sine Jonathan Anderson showed a rounded green frog minaudière in his fall 2026 collection for Dior, fans wondered when the piece will make its red carpet debut. Well, we finally have our answer: the Cannes Film Festival. On Tuesday night, Ruth Negga brought the viral, smile-inducing piece to the red carpet for the event’s opening ceremony, complete with an enchanting look that instantly brought lily pads to mind.

For the occasion, Negga arrived to the Festival’s opening ceremony dinner in a sweeping sage green silk gown by Dior. Her floor-length style featured a button-up bodice, accentuated by a plunging neckline overlaid with delicate black lace. Further accentuated by botanical black lace across its hemline, Negga’s slip-style gown created an enchantingly romantic feel. The piece’s greatest statement came from numerous fringed silk strips embroidered with clear sequins, creating a glittering effect as if the actor was dripping in dewdrops.

The actor’s most notable accessory was aforementioned frog clutch, complete with a round silver metal frame inspired by the brand’s revived 1947 Dior Médaillon motif. Overall, her other accessories—including a Chopard diamond necklace and mirrored silver platform sandals—went for a more “quality over quantity” approach.

Negga had previously appeared in a Loewe campaign when Anderson was the Spanish brand’s creative director. Her outing in Dior made her the latest star to have followed him to the French brand, a trajectory that’s also proven true for Greta Lee, Josh O’Connor, and Harris Dickinson, who had all championed Anderson’s work at Loewe. They, like any Anderson fan, know the man loves a whimsical touch. He’s previously unleashed the meme-inspired Loewe tomato and J.W. Anderson pigeon bags into the world. An adorable Dior hedgehog clutch has also already gone viral, thanks to his Instagram. As for what Anderson will cook up next at the French label? We’re keeping our eyes peeled on the Cannes red carpet—and on LACMA, which will host Dior’s Cruise 2027 show today.

Negga’s gleaming Cannes moment marked the first of many for the actress this week. As a member of this year’s festival jury, Negga will spend 12 days viewing the festival’s various films—and deciding its 2026 winners—with fellow jury members Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Park Chan-wook, Laura Wandel, Diego Céspedes, Stellan Skarsgård, Isaach De Bankolé, and Paul Laverty. The Met Gala is still making its way around your newsfeeds, but the fashion world has already moved on to the South of France, where the annual Cannes Film Festival is underway. With some of the world’s biggest cinema stars, socialites, models, and the occasional influencer, its decidedly the year’s most glamorous seaside red carpet. This year, the jury alone includes style stars like Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, and Chloé Zhao, but the film lineup promises appearances from an array of other famous faces, sure to bring their best looks along with them.

Per usual, this year’s festival features an impressive list of film debuts. Margot Robbie was a drama-club kid during her teenage years, as one would expect of someone who is now an Oscar-nominated actress and theater producer. Yet today in London, Robbie was feeling a little bit more like a band geek—at least, sartorially speaking. Attending the West End transfer premiere of the play 1536, Robbie suited up in McQueen’s edgy take on a marching band–esque jacket. A pair of ultra-low-rise “bumsters” added even more drama.

While they’re technically better referred to as Napoleon jackets or military jackets (we just prefer the less violent interpretation), marching band jackets have seen a sudden return to fashion this year. They had originally been repurposed as a signifier of subversive cool back in the ’80s when Britain’s New Romantics music scene appropriated the look (see: Adam Ant), and then returned to the “In” list in the ’00s when they popped up on the influential runways of Hedi Slimane–era Dior Homme and Christophe Decarnin–era Balmain. The garment reappeared en masse on several spring 2026 runways, although Robbie’s McQueen version may be the sexiest iteration.

Robbie wore a black T-shirt underneath, but the jacket itself is cropped mid torso—meant to be worn wide open. While the piece exposes the midriff, elongated sleeves kept Robbie’s knuckles modestly covered. It’s decidedly on trend, but the outfit also harkens back to Alexander McQueen history. The house founder showed a cropped military jacket in his 2003 “Irere” collection. The low-rise “bumster” pants that Margot wore are, of course, one of the definitive McQueen codes. They’re called “bumster” because they’re cut so low, they risk showing off a bit of bum. Robbie, however, managed to avoid that risk.

Written by Ava Pickett, 1536 explores the impact of Anne Boleyn’s execution on three working class women in Tudor England. The play picked up numerous awards and rave reviews. Robbie and her Lucky Chap Productions company came aboard as producers as the show moves to the West End.

So, while the event may have been more drama club, we guess it’s appropriate that Robbie was on the sidelines helping to hype the production in her marching band jacket.

Nobody has fun with fashion quite like Demi Moore. The actor loves making a statement, and she’s to continue that streak this year as a member of the jury for the Cannes Film Festival. To kick off the first day, Moore delivered a burst of whimsical polka dots, courtesy of Simon Porte Jacquemus.

While arriving to a jury members’ photo-call at the Palais des Festivals, Moore stepped out in a strapless white dress from Jacquemus’s fall 2026 collection. Her style featured exaggerated hips as well as a mermaid-style tiered hem. However, the piece’s boldest accent came from a smattering of black, red, blue, and yellow polka dots—many attached to thin wisps of feathers, creating a floating effect.

To match her dramatic dress, Moore carried a polka-dotted version of the brand’s Valérie handbag. Stylist Brad Goreski kept focus on the star’s look with clean white pumps and coordinating cat-eyed sunglasses, framing her statement piece with stark neutral elements. Sparkling blue sapphire and diamond earrings glamorously completed Moore’s ensemble with a touch of sparkle.

Moore’s polka-dot dress proved her longtime statement dressing streak is only growing. Whether she’s wearing feathered Balenciaga couture, Western-inspired Brandon Maxwell suiting, or a leather Gucci catsuit, Moore has proven adept at wearing a range of dynamic looks in recent years. Her Jacquemus number is no exception, bringing a playful take to the classic, crisp white attire that’s signature of the south of France.

Of course, this is only the beginning of Moore’s upcoming Cannes wardrobe. On his Instagram Stories, Goreski teased her white dress as “Look 1,” nodding to a range of outfits on the horizon. As part of this year’s jury, Moore will spend 12 days viewing the festival’s various films—and ultimately deciding its 2026 winners—alongside fellow jury members Ruth Negga, Chloé Zhao, Park Chan-wook, Laura Wandel, Diego Céspedes, Stellan Skarsgård, Isaach De Bankolé, and Paul Laverty. The Cannes Film Festival has officially begun, and Meadow Walker is taking an easygoing approach to the whirlwind occasion. The model arrived in the south of France in a Max Mara look that was polished enough for a bit of business, but relaxed enough for travel.

While leaving the Hotel Carlton this morning, Walker was spotted in a white and blue–striped linen shirt beneath an oversize, double-breasted cream blazer. Instead of traditional suiting trousers or matching shorts, Walker slipped on long black drawstring track pants with white stripes down their sides. It gave her ensemble a sporty, laidback feel.

The star completed her outfit with a pair of silver-framed squared sunglasses, as well as a large black leather version of Max Mara’s Whitney tote bag. Her look was finished with narrowed black leather flats, accentuated by rounded toes and high vamps.

Walker’s appearance at the Cannes Film Festival will be both nostalgic and heartfelt. Later this week, the star will be attending the festival’s 25th anniversary screening of The Fast & the Furious, notably led by her late father Paul Walker.
