SEREMBAN, June 14 — Police have arrested a man on suspicion of abusing his two-year-old stepson here yesterday.

Seremban district police chief ACP Mohd Yatim Osman said police received a report on the incident from the child's biological mother at about 8.30pm before arresting the 24-year-old suspect in front of Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital (HTJ) about two hours later.

"Preliminary investigations found that the incident occurred inside a car occupied by the victim, his mother, who is in her 20s, and his stepfather at a petrol station along the Seremban-Jelebu road.

"Investigations also revealed that the victim had allegedly been repeatedly assaulted by the man, who works as a delivery rider, resulting in injuries while at the family's home in Jalan Rasah here on previous occasions,” he said in a statement today.

He said a physical examination of the victim found reddish bruising on the front and back of the body, believed to have been caused by pinching. The child is currently receiving treatment at HTJ.

Mohd Yatim said the couple had only recently married, tying the knot in April this year.

Meanwhile, he said checks found that the man had no prior criminal record and had tested negative in a preliminary urine screening.

He said the suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 20 to facilitate investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. — Bernama

JOHOR BAHRU, June 3 — A 22-year-old woman pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of culpable homicide over the death of one of her newborn twin daughters last month.

The accused, Nuran Batrisya Jamaludin, nodded and pleaded guilty after the charge was read out to her before Judge Mohd Zamir Suhaimee.

According to the charge sheet, she was accused of causing the death of a baby girl with the intention of causing bodily injury likely to result in death.

The offence was allegedly committed in the car park of Blok Rajawali at the Program Perumahan Rakyat Melana Indah flats in Taman Sutera Utama here between 11am and 2.30pm on May 20.

Nuran Batrisya was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a prison sentence of up to 30 years and a fine upon conviction.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Nevina did not offer bail.

However, the accused, who is unmarried and unemployed, applied for bail on the grounds that she is caring for the victim’s twin sibling and has family commitments.

Under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, bail may be granted at the discretion of the Sessions Court or High Court.

The court granted bail of RM20,000 with two local sureties and imposed additional conditions. The accused was ordered to surrender her passport to the court, report to the nearest police station once a month and refrain from interfering with witnesses.

The court fixed July 3 for mention, submission of documents and sentencing.

It was previously reported that police arrested a young mother for allegedly throwing her newborn baby girl from the 10th floor of a residential flat here last month.

Acting Johor police chief Deputy Commissioner Hoo Chuan Huat said police received a report on May 20 at 2.40pm regarding the discovery of the baby’s body in the parking area of a residential flat.

Based on investigations, police believed the suspect, who is the baby’s biological mother, was responsible for the incident.

She was detained at the compound of Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) before being arrested.

In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, the HA said that it had noticed some social media posts discussing an intern doctor’s alleged professional misconduct at different hospitals.

“The HA considers the matter extremely serious, affecting the professional image of healthcare staff,” the statement said.

The authority said it had reported to the police the suspected case of “someone who logged into the Clinical Management System at Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) with another person’s account and accessed patient records at Tuen Mun Hospital without authorisation.”

“The HA has immediately suspended the clinical duties of the intern doctor concerned and a resident doctor at Tuen Mun Hospital, and has also suspended their access right[s] to the system in order to protect patient and system security,” it said.

“The HA has notified the medical school of the relevant university to follow up on the intern doctor’s assessment of being fit for practice.”

According to the statement, before the suspensions, the HA had previously issued a serious warning to the trainee doctor for committing an inappropriate act during an internship at Ruttonjee Hospital and taken disciplinary action against the intern doctor and another resident doctor at CMC.

It had also taken disciplinary action against the intern doctor and another resident doctor for misconduct at CMC.

The HA’s move comes after a trainee doctor, who published videos documenting her medical internship, allegedly used medical equipment without authorisation to X-ray her own knee and posted a photo of the procedure on social media.

She was also suspected of asking her boyfriend, a resident doctor at Tuen Mun Hospital, to come to Ruttonjee Hospital, where she was interning, to assist her with a medical procedure.

The couple, known only by their initials YKK and LRQ, appeared at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday morning.

In March, they were charged with “ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of child or young person” in relation to an incident on September 23 last year, when a No. 8 typhoon signal was in effect due to Super Typhoon Ragasa.

The couple went to watch the waves at a waterfront in Chai Wan with their two children. The mother and their five-year-old son were washed away by waves, and the father jumped in to save them.

The three were rescued by a boat operator and firefighters and were later taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. The mother and son were in a critical condition, local media reported at the time.

The couple’s nine-year-old daughter was not injured.

Magistrate Kestrel Lam ordered the two defendants to sign a bind-over order, an agreement between a court and a defendant to maintain good behaviour for a certain period. It is typically used for minor offences that are unlikely to be repeated, and the defendant is not left with a criminal record.

The bind-over order they signed was for a period of three years and in the sum of HK$2,000, meaning they will be fined HK$2,000 if they commit a similar offence during that time.
