Is the pope a Real Madrid fan? Leo’s admission upsets Barcelona faithful

Pontiff appeals in Catalan for harmony on Barcelona leg of Spain tour after making football foes in city

To the delight of many, Pope Leo XIV kicked off the Barcelona leg of his week-long visit to Spain with a few words in Catalan, calling on the faithful who had gathered in the city’s cathedral on Tuesday “to build harmony and communion beyond all polarisation”.

The pontiff’s familiar and commendable plea for people to set aside their differences may, however, have come a little late. Three days earlier, while chatting to journalists on the flight to Spain, Leo had made an awkward confession.

Despite being one of the few major football markets in Asia, India remained without a confirmed broadcaster for the tournament until recently. While China finalised its World Cup broadcast deal in May, Indian football fans had to wait until the final days before kickoff for an official announcement.  However, the match timings for pose a challenge for Indian viewers as they will be played across multiple cities and time zones in North America.

Egypt’s squad kicks off with borrowed brilliance — Trezeguet, Little Zico and Dunga in tow

Malay Mail

CAIRO, June 7 — France’s David Trezeguet and Brazil’s Zico and Dunga all left their mark on World Cup history decades ago.

In 2026, their names will return to football’s biggest stage but this time on the backs of Egyptian players.

When the Pharaohs walk onto the tournament pitch this month, several squad members will carry monikers drawn from some of the game’s most iconic figures — names first picked up years ago on dusty training grounds, in youth academies and across local leagues.

The tradition is rooted in similarities of playing style or appearance and in a football culture that has long embraced legendary names.

One standout is Mahmoud Hassan, popularly called “Trezeguet”, who plays for Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

The 31-year-old winger, who previously had a spell in the Premier League with Aston Villa, made his World Cup debut at Russia 2018 and is now preparing for his second appearance.

His nickname was given by youth coach Badr Ragab, who saw in Hassan’s style and aerial prowess shades of the French striker who helped France lift the 1998 World Cup and later featured in the 2002 and 2006 tournaments.

“From his first days... I noticed (Hassan’s) resemblance to Trezeguet, both in appearance and playing style,” Ragab told AFP.

“He was strong in the air and scored goals in a similar way, so I gave him the name. I never imagined it would stay with him for so long.”

The original Trezeguet earned 71 caps for France before ending his international career in 2014.

Now, Egypt’s own Trezeguet is edging towards a milestone of his own, sitting just short of 100 caps, a mark he could reach should Egypt progress beyond the group stage at the World Cup.

The team will face Belgium, Iran and New Zealand in Group G.

‘Little Zico’

Brazil’s influence is also visible within the Egyptian squad.

Mostafa Abdel-Raouf, a midfielder for Pyramids FC, has been known as “Little Zico” since his early days in the game, a reference to one of Brazil’s most gifted playmakers.

Unlike Hassan’s nickname, the origin was more personal than tactical.

Abdel-Raouf’s older brother, who also played football, was nicknamed Zico because his full name included “Zaki”.

“When Mostafa started playing, coaches called him ‘little Zico’ because he was my younger brother,” he told AFP.

The name stayed with him as he moved through different clubs, he added.

The original Zico made 71 appearances for Brazil and played in three World Cups before retiring in 1994.

Egypt’s 29-year-old Zico is only just beginning his international journey.

Called up for the first time ahead of the tournament, he made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut in a friendly against Russia in May.

Another Brazilian-inspired nickname belongs to Nabil Emad, known as “Dunga”, after the midfielder who captained Brazil to World Cup glory in 1994.

The 27-year-old, now playing as a defensive midfielder for Saudi Pro League club Al-Najma, is competing in his second major international tournament after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

His nickname dates back to his early career, when he was spotted playing in Egypt’s second division.

“I admired the Brazilian player, and Nabil played in the same position with a very similar style,” said Wael Habib, a former official at Al Assiouty, now Pyramids FC, who signed him in 2014.

Emad went on to establish himself at Pyramids, later joining Egyptian giants Zamalek before moving abroad.

In Egypt, such naming traditions are far from unusual.

Ragab, who coined the nickname Trezeguet, also handed out other European-inspired names in his youth teams, including “Nedved” for ex-Al Ahly winger Karim Walid, after Czech legend Pavel Nedved.

Other players have carried names borrowed from well-known figures, from Al Ahly’s Ahmed Ramadan, known as “Beckham”, to former Zamalek player Youssef Ibrahim, whose nickname “Obama” set him apart beyond the pitch. — AFP

‘You make people a bit happier’: the football app building friendships in London

Footy Addicts helps amateur players find a game at short notice – and tackles the problem of loneliness

Cries of “Boss! Boss! Boss!” emerge from the pitch during a hard-fought game of football in a London park. There aren’t a lot of names used in this game, because most players only met just before kick-off. They were brought together by an app that’s injecting life into grassroots football.

Footy Addicts was invented to solve an infuriating problem for amateur players – the late dropout, which can lead to unbalanced teams and ruined games. The app brings together strangers who are desperate to play football, and who can step in after a cancellation to make up the numbers at short notice.

Cuba hopes for World Cup respite from US sabre-rattling – but prepares for the worst

With some matches being held in nearby Miami, a Cuban response to US military action could mar the tournament

As Cuba crumbles under a nearly five-month-long US oil blockade, many on the island hope that the World Cup might save the island from US attack – or at least offer a respite until the competition ends on 19 July.

“The beginning of the World Cup will make it more difficult for the United States to carry out a military action in Cuba,” said Carlos Alzugaray, Cuba’s former ambassador to the EU. “Cuba is very close to the US, and can hit many targets inside the US, especially in south Florida, with drones or other weapons.”

ISL: Can the Kolkata derby decide the elite league winners tomorrow?

Back in the day, the result of a Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant (erstwhile Mohun Bagan) and East Bengal decided the fate of the Calcutta Football League more often than not. The footballing fortunes have now changed with the emergence of Indian Super League (ISL) beyond recognition – but the clash on Sunday, for the first time in this elite competition, seems like a throwback to those days.

Call it the Super Sunday for Indian football if you like as the Big Two, two of Asia’s oldest extant clubs are toe-to-toe in occupying the top two spots in the table with Mumbai City third on goal-difference with all three on equal points (22) in this truncated edition of the league. The fans of red-and-golden brigade have, in particular, reasons to be upbeat as it’s been a long wait for them which has seen the club finishing in the lower lungs of ISL several times.

What’s more, East Bengal could never replicate their success rate against their traditional rivals in ISL– failing to win a single of their 10 meetings in this league with a 2-2 draw in 2023-24 being the only time they have got a point. The uncertainty over sponsors, management woes have seen them building the team from scratch on at least three occasions but the current lot under coach astute coach Oscar Bruzon looks to be made of sterner stuff who can challenge the defending champions.

It’s more than just a derby.

East Bengal stand one step away from ending a 22-year wait for a top-flight league title and registering their first-ever ISL derby win.

On the other side, Mohun Bagan are chasing a historic league hat-trick.

A season-defining night awaits… pic.twitter.com/qhL6TdqO2F

— RevSportz Global (@RevSportzGlobal) May 16, 2026

A remarkable aspect of ISL 2026, which looked a non-starter even till last January with no commercial partners in sight, is that as many as seven teams can theoretically the crown – as in till Friday. Full points on Sunday for either East Bengal or the defending champions MBSG will eliminate Jamshedpur FC, Bengaluru FC and FC Goa. Either of Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC can, meanwhile, finish on 25 points which is also where the winners of the derby can end if they lose their last match.

With head-to-head record being the first tie-breaker in case of equal points, East Bengal would want to be level on points with Mumbai City FC. For Mohun Bagan, who have lost to Mumbai, Punjab FC would be the team they would want to be on same points to decide the season’s champions. However, neither Punjab nor Mumbai FC would be in the hunt if the Kolkata clubs get four points from the remaining two rounds.

If Mohun Bagan and East Bengal end on 26 points and Sunday’s derby ends in a draw, goal difference will be considered to decide on the winners. East Bengal, as things stand, have a comfortable plus-five lead there.

‘’It would be an apt tribute to Tutu da (Swapan Sadhan Bose) if we can win the big game on Sunday and ensure back-to-back titles,’’ remarked Subhasis Bose, Mohun Bagan skipper and leader of defence in a media interview. The former Mohun Bagan president, a larger-than-life figure in Kolkata maidan who has held different positions in the maroon-and-green camp, passed away at 79 on Tuesday.

East Bengal coach Bruzon, however, insisted his side are embracing the occasion with belief rather than pressure while also acknowledging the expectations surrounding the defending champions. ''We don't take it as a responsibility. Probably, Mohun Bagan will have more tension because they need to defend the title. But we are having a dream. And when you have a dream, you can move mountains,” the Spaniard added.

Chelsea’s Gusto eyes France starting role as World Cup dream becomes reality

Malay Mail

PARIS, June 2 — Malo Gusto’s proven big match-winning temperament will stand him in good stead as he looks to challenge Jules Kounde for the starting berth as France’s right back at the World Cup.

The 23-year-old was part of the Chelsea team which won the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup last season and despite the Londoners’ subsequent poor campaign—in which they finished a dismal 10th in the Premier League—Gusto has done enough to convince France coach Didier Deschamps to take him to the World Cup.

Gusto told AFP that it has been the fulfilment of a childhood dream and has made him “hugely proud”.

His inclusion in the 26-man squad speaks volumes of Deschamps’s view of Gusto, not least since midfielder Eduardo Camavinga missed out following Real Madrid’s mediocre campaign.

Indeed Gusto paid tribute to a Chelsea teammate as having brought him on in leaps and bounds since he joined from Ligue 1 side Lyon for a reported 30 million euros ($35 million) in 2023.

“Reece James has been tops,” said Gusto of the England fullback whom he is in direct competition with for a starting berth at club level.

“He is someone I have learnt a lot from since coming to Chelsea.”

Gusto, who has nine caps to his name since being blooded in 2023, says that former Barcelona and Brazil legend Dani Alves is the benchmark for him as a fullback.

“He is someone who had all the qualities of a modern fullback, who defended well but attacked very effectively as well,” said Gusto.

Gusto admits that he is far from the finished article, having only switched to fullback aged 17.

“Defensively there are a lot of areas where I could do better,” he said.

“In attack I could bring more with regards to statistics.

“But I am working on it, indeed working very hard.

“That is what pays off every time. It is not magic, everyone knows that.

“When you work as you should, you obtain results.

“That is what helps me a lot. It is because of that that I am in the French squad.”

Reference point

Gusto, Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki and Paris Saint Germain’s two-time Champions League-winning forward Bradley Barcola all came through the Lyon academy at the same time.

“To see us three here is something really beautiful,” he said.

“The Lyon youth system is recognised worldwide.

“There is a Lyon DNA: Bradley, Rayan and myself, we are all ball players.

“The academy taught us a lot about how to play.

“To not be afraid of using the ball in the best possible fashion.”

As France bid to regain the World Cup that they won in 2018 before losing the 2022 final to Argentina, Gusto said that the whole squad is on the same page as Deschamps leads the national side for the final time at a major tournament.

“That helps, of course,” he said.

“I endeavour to bring my energy, my carefree attitude as well.

“I am there to put my brick in the building.

“We have players like Kylian (Mbappe), Ousmane (Dembele), who are among the best players in the world.

“To have connections with them on the pitch is magnificent.”

Kounde may be the incumbent right back but he is four years older than Gusto, who has a long-term objective.

“I would like to become a reference point as a right back,” he said.

“It is a target that attracts me, which I must attain.

“I would like also to be able to say I won this World Cup.

“To have played in another as well.” — AFP
