161-year-old Kyoto confectionary maker releases new edible Pokémon lineup

Transforming iconic characters into delicious works of art.

Pokémon is a beloved franchise, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in Japan who has not heard of it, even if they have never personally interacted with any of its media. Through collaborations with famous brands from all areas of the market, the cute and charming character designs can be seen in many places throughout the country.

Despite both being of Japanese origin, the combination of a 161-year-old traditional Japanese confectionery maker and an electric mouse and its friends may not be the natural pairing for most people. However, over the last few years, the shop Shichijo Kanshundo has been releasing delightful treats that blend history with pop culture, and from May 11, they have expanded that lineup with another set of four Pokémon kyo-gashi (traditional Kyoto-style sweets).

The shop is renowned for its jonamagashi, which are handmade by craftsmen one by one. While these sweets, traditionally served during tea ceremonies, typically reflect the changing seasons or classical poetry, Shichijo Kanshundo is using their delicate artistry to bring Eevee and Poltchageist into the physical world.

The Eevee sweet is crafted using nerikiri, a traditional mixture of sweet white bean paste, starch syrup, and gyuhi (glutinous rice flour) that artisans sculpt by hand into intricate, soft shapes. Poltchageist is made as a jonyo manju, a light, fluffy steamed bun made with yam, sugar, and joyo-ko (fine rice flour).

These two Pokémon join two others that were previously released to form this new set of four: Shaymin (Land Forme) and Oricorio (Sensu Style). Shaymin is a kinton, made by crumbling white bean paste or nerikiri into a soboro (ground/crumb-like) state and applying it around a core of bean paste. Oricorio, on the other hand, is expressed using uiro, a Japanese sweet made by adding sugar and water to rice flour, among other ingredients, and steaming it until firm, which results in a chewy texture. The set costs 2,916 yen (US$18) and, since they’re made without unnecessary preservatives, are best enjoyed immediately.

Catching these sweets requires a little bit of extra planning, because the physical store in Kyoto only sells these sets on their special sales event on the seventh of every month, so starting June 7, visitors will be able to pick some up on the afternoon stroll through one of Kyoto’s most historic neighborhoods near Sanjusangendo Temple.

There is another method to get your hands on them earlier: you can order them online and receive them directly at your home, although they will be delivered frozen. However, that also means you don’t need to enjoy them all at once, and can take your time to savor the flavors over a period of 14 days from the date of shipment.

If you do happen to find yourself in the Higashiyama area in Kyoto on the seventh of a month, though, be sure to stop by the shop early. These limited-edition treats are a wonderful way to experience Kyoto’s traditional craftsmanship, even if you’re not a dedicated Pokémon fan.

Suvendu Adhikari aide murder case: CBI arrests fifth accused from Varanasi

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a fifth accused in the murder of Chandranath Rath, former personal assistant to West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari, as the agency widened its probe into what it believes was a “planned and organised conspiracy”.

The latest arrest was made in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, where the central agency nabbed 40-year-old Vinay Rai alias Pumpum Rai, a resident of the Zamani area in Ghazipur district.

The development came a day after the CBI arrested the alleged main shooter, Rajkumar Singh, from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh with the assistance of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

According to CBI sources, Rajkumar Singh, a resident of Chhapar in Uttar Pradesh, had been on the run after the killing. Investigators first raided a house in Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar area, but failed to trace him there. He was eventually apprehended near a toll plaza on the Haridwar-Delhi Highway during a joint operation by the CBI and local police.

Officials suspect Rajkumar was attempting to flee through Delhi and Haridwar when he was intercepted.

The agency said Rajkumar’s name surfaced during the interrogation of two earlier arrested accused — Mayank Raj Mishra and Raj Singh. Following his detention, he was brought to Kolkata on transit remand and produced before a special CBI court on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, three accused — Mayank Raj Mishra, Vicky Maurya and Raj Singh — have been remanded to police custody till 24 May.

Rath, 41, a former Indian Air Force personnel, was shot dead in Madhyamgram in North 24-Parganas on the night of 6 May, barely 48 hours after the announcement of the West Bengal assembly election results.

Investigators said Rath was seated in the front passenger seat of a car when motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire before fleeing the spot. The driver of the vehicle was also injured in the attack.

Both were rushed to hospital, where doctors declared Rath dead.

The West Bengal Police had initially formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and arrested multiple accused from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including an alleged sharpshooter from Buxar. Given the gravity of the case, the investigation was later handed over to the CBI.

After taking over the probe, the agency re-registered the case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 103(1) for murder, Section 61(1) for criminal conspiracy and Section 111(2)(a) dealing with organised crime. Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act were also invoked.

The case was initiated on the basis of a complaint filed by Rath’s brother, who alleged that the killing was part of a “planned and organised conspiracy” involving several unidentified persons.

Public prosecutor advocate Bivas Chatterjee told the court that the prosecution had sought additional charges related to destruction of evidence. The court subsequently accepted the plea.

Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari had visited Rath’s residence on Sunday to attend the funeral service and assured the family that the accused would not be spared.

“I have faith in the chief minister,” Rath’s mother, Hasirani Rath, said after the visit.

Couple who took kids storm-chasing during typhoon cleared of child neglect after judge issues behaviour order

The couple, known only by their initials YKK and LRQ, appeared at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday morning.

In March, they were charged with “ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of child or young person” in relation to an incident on September 23 last year, when a No. 8 typhoon signal was in effect due to Super Typhoon Ragasa.

The couple went to watch the waves at a waterfront in Chai Wan with their two children. The mother and their five-year-old son were washed away by waves, and the father jumped in to save them.

The three were rescued by a boat operator and firefighters and were later taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. The mother and son were in a critical condition, local media reported at the time.

The couple’s nine-year-old daughter was not injured.

Magistrate Kestrel Lam ordered the two defendants to sign a bind-over order, an agreement between a court and a defendant to maintain good behaviour for a certain period. It is typically used for minor offences that are unlikely to be repeated, and the defendant is not left with a criminal record.

The bind-over order they signed was for a period of three years and in the sum of HK$2,000, meaning they will be fined HK$2,000 if they commit a similar offence during that time.

Taylor Swift becomes youngest woman inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame

Malay Mail

NEW YORK, June 12 — Taylor Swift yesterday became the youngest woman ever inducted into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame, another milestone in the 36-year-old US pop star’s record-breaking career.

The female record was previously held by Carole Bayer Sager, who was 43 when she joined in 1987. Stevie Wonder remains the youngest person ever admitted, at age 32 in 1983.

Artists become eligible for the Hall of Fame 20 years after the release of their first commercial track. For Swift, that was Tim McGraw, released in June 2006.

Her success since is undeniable: the American artist has recorded 12 albums spanning country, pop, and folk, earning her 14 Grammy Awards in the United States, including four Album of the Year trophies — a record.

“Swift’s ability to shapeshift as a songwriter, to inhabit different sonic landscapes and write as credibly in the world of one genre as she does another is part of her superpower as a songwriter,” reads her bio on the Hall of Fame website.

“It also represents the boldness and bravery of her artistry: to explore new frontiers when the most practical next step would be to keep mining the material that has gotten you the success in the first place.”

Swift appeared on the red carpet in New York yesterday wearing a strapless black dress with floral motifs ahead of the naming ceremony.

‘Great honour’

Also inducted yesterday were Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS, the band behind hits such as Rock and Roll All Nite and Detroit Rock City.

“It doesn’t suck,” Stanley told AFP when asked how it felt to join the prestigious songwriting ranks.

“It’s really hard to digest the idea. I certainly don’t consider myself in that rarified air of some of the writers, but if you wanna be in that club, I’m there.”

Kenny Loggins, the hitmaker behind movie soundtrack classics like Footloose and Danger Zone from Top Gun, was inducted into the Hall of Fame as well.

“It’s a great honour and I appreciate it,” Loggins told AFP. “It’s the culmination of a lifetime writing, and that’s exciting for me.”

Canadian singer Alanis Morissette, inescapable in the 1990s, and American record producer Walter Afanasieff were also among the total of nine songwriters joining the Hall of Fame this year.

Estimates put Taylor Swift’s worldwide sales at over 250 million album-equivalents. Her most recent tour in 2023 and 2024, titled “The Eras Tour,” brought in a record sum of around two billion dollars.

She is also the female artist with the most songs ever to reach the top 10 list compiled by Billboard, the leading US music magazine.

Swift is omnipresent in the media. After unveiling a country track for the soundtrack of the film Toy Story 5, she was at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday for a game of the NBA Finals. — AFP
