The FCC Is Hearing Public Appeals to Its Decision to Ban Foreign Drones

Last year, the Federal Communications Commission added all foreign-made drones to what it calls the "Covered List," effectively banning drones produced outside of the US -- that includes DJI. DJI sued, of course, and now the FCC is hearing public appeals to its decision.

MoD has no system to detect civilian harm caused by military, study shows

5 May 2026 at 18:47

Revelation comes after report commissioned by department released in response to charity’s FoI request

The Ministry of Defence has no system for examining whether UK military action has killed or injured civilians in war, a study commissioned by the department has revealed.

The MoD also “does not maintain a central register of civilian harm incidents or allegations” and, despite mass casualties caused by other countries, has concluded there is no need to do so because its existing mitigation is considered effective.

Prosecutors to ‘fast-track’ hate crime cases in England and Wales after spate of attacks

5 May 2026 at 18:22

Staff told to prosecute as quickly as they can, rather than waiting to gather all evidence, to tackle ‘climate of fear’ felt by Jewish community

Prosecutors in England and Wales have been told to “fast-track” hate crime prosecutions after a spate of antisemitic attacks that the prime minister on Tuesday called a “crisis for all of us”.

Stephen Parkinson, the director of public prosecutions, issued guidance to his staff on Tuesday telling them to bring forward prosecutions against any sort of hate crime as quickly as they could, rather than waiting until they had gathered all possible evidence.

The black-and-white seal of the United States Copyright Office appears overlaid on a background of scattered 100-dollar bills. The seal features an eagle and the text “Seal of the United States Copyright Office 1870.”.

The US Copyright Office has proposed a substantial increase to the cost to register photos, citing rising costs and inflation. It argues the cost is still negligible, but critics say the Office is out of touch with reality.

‘Not a good look’: witnesses refuse to appear before NSW parliamentary hearings after court ruling

5 May 2026 at 15:00

Chris Minns’ chief of staff launched legal action to avoid giving evidence. Since the court ruled in his favour, others are doing the same

Witnesses are refusing to appear before New South Wales parliamentary inquiries due to a recent court ruling, in a move labelled as having a “completely unacceptable” impact on public interest investigations.

In December, the NSW court of appeal ruled that provisions of the Parliamentary Evidence Act allowing for arrest warrants were invalid on the basis that they impaired the court’s institutional integrity.

Singapore punter wins life-changing S$12.8m Toto jackpot

SINGAPORE, May 5 — A single Toto ticket has turned its holder into an overnight multi‑millionaire, snagging a staggering S$12.8 million (RM39.7 million) jackpot in the May 4 cascade draw after three consecutive draws produced no winner.

According to The Straits Times, the winning numbers were 7, 18, 19, 30, 36 and 48, with additional number 11. The Group 1 prize money of S$12,813,283 was won through a QuickPick Ordinary Entry ticket purchased using the Singapore Pools account betting service.

Under a cascade draw, if no ticket matches all six numbers for three successive draws, the entire accumulated prize pool is awarded in the fourth draw — in this case shared by all Group 2 winners if the top prize remained unclaimed. However, a sole Group 1 winner emerged, leaving the S$12.8 million jackpot intact. Seventeen Group 2 winners each received more than S$87,000.

The prize money started at S$1.2 million on April 23 and snowballed to S$5.7 million by April 30 after repeated rollovers.

Beating the astronomical odds — approximately 1 in 14 million — places the winner in an extraordinarily select club. The last Group 1 jackpot win occurred on January 29, when six tickets shared a S$13.5 million payout.

While the identity of the winner remains unknown — whether an individual or part of a syndicate — the anonymous punter can now begin planning how to enjoy their sudden fortune.

In today’s newsletter: With the use of facial recognition skyrocketing, there are calls for the rapid development of safeguards

Good morning. Over the last couple of days, the Guardian has been reporting that facial recognition technology is being rolled out across the UK at a pace that appears to be outstripping the rules designed to govern it. Police forces are increasingly using live systems to scan members of the public in real time, while retailers are deploying similar tools to identify suspected shoplifters.

Advocates of the technology argue that facial recognition is effective and here to stay. Critics warn it risks creating a system where people are monitored – and sometimes wrongly flagged – without clear safeguards.

Suit alleges that Hong Kong-based Justin Sun engaged in a campaign to ‘torch’ the company’s reputation

World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture co-founded by Donald Trump and his sons, said on Monday it had filed a defamation lawsuit in Florida state court against the Hong Kong-based crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun, as a dispute escalates between the project and one of its most prominent backers.

World Liberty posted a copy of its lawsuit on X in which it accused Sun of launching a “public smear campaign”. It alleged that Sun had improperly transferred some of his WLFI tokens that come with voting and governance rights to crypto exchange Binance and, separately, that he had placed bets that WLFI would decline in market value, known as short selling. That was part of a coordinated effort to push the token’s market price down as public trading began in September, the lawsuit alleged.
