                                                             Booth The Magnificent!   The other day I came across this George Booth New Yorker drawing (published in the issue of November 13, 1989). I immediately took a screenshot of it and put it aside for a rainy day Spill. Well today’s that rainy day. The drawing is a reminder of why I fell so heavily under Booth’s graphic spell back in the 1970s when I began contributing to The New Yorker. I can’t say that I had a favorite New Yorker cartoonist

The other day I came across this George Booth New Yorker drawing (published in the issue of November 13, 1989). I immediately took a screenshot of it and put it aside for a rainy day Spill. Well today’s that rainy day.

The drawing is a reminder of why I fell so heavily under Booth’s graphic spell back in the 1970s when I began contributing to The New Yorker. I can’t say that I had a favorite New Yorker cartoonist then — with so many to choose from, picking just one would’ve been near impossible. But I will say that Booth was most certainly in the top of my top ten favorites. His influence was a huge energy boost; energy felt and acted on (in my own drawings) as I looked through each new issue of The New Yorker. His cartoon art was high bar — something so wonderful it was truly inspirational.

The drawing above hit me (in the best way) because of the drawing itself. Booth’s creative viewpoint was outstanding. He gives us a drone-like view here, and pulls it off because Booth could draw like nobody’s business (never been exactly sure what that means, but I like the sound of it) — he was a cartoonist Michelin chef. Look at the way he handled the house, the car, the characters and the horizon (well, that ‘s just about the entire drawing isn’t it?). Perfect balance, perfect shading, perfect body language for all. And the capper: the mother floating above. (The New Yorker‘s database description of the drawing reads: “Wife to husband about his bloated mother floating upside down above the house.” 

This is exactly the kind of drawing that caused me to break out of linear cartooning, and let go (on paper that is). Let go and try anything. Coupled with Booth’s try anything approach was his ability — as my late colleague Henry Martin would’ve put it — to draw funny. Every character he set down on paper was stand-alone funny. Look at that little kid in the drawing (to me, he looks a little like Bruce Eric Kaplan’s characters, but in miniature). The kid is perhaps the simplest element on the  scene, and yet…we don’t need more than Booth has drawn. The dot for an eye, and a super short tightly blotted line for the mouth is all that’s needed — more would’ve ruined the moment (this is a foundational understanding to all those practicing in the school of Thurber).

Looking again at this Booth drawing only reaffirms what didn’t need reaffirming, but is nevertheless necessary to talk about. The drawing is a reminder of what’s possible in cartoonland.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch

Rea Irvin’s A-Z Entry

Rea Irvin (pictured above. Self portrait above from Meet the Artist) Born, San Francisco, 1881; died in the Virgin Islands,1972. Irvin was the cover artist for the New Yorker’s first issue, February 21, 1925. He was the magazine’s first art and only art supervisor (some refer to him as its first art editor) holding the position from 1925 until 1939 when James Geraghty assumed the title of art editor. Irvin then became art director and remained in that position until William Shawn officially succeeded Harold Ross in early 1952. Irvin’s last original work for the magazine was the magazine’s cover of July 12, 1958. The February 21, 1925 Eustace Tilley cover had been reproduced every year on the magazine’s anniversary until 1994, when R. Crumb’s Tilley-inspired cover appeared. Tilley has since reappeared, with other artists substituting from time-to-time. Number of New Yorker covers (not including the repeat appearances of the first cover every anniversary up to 1991): 179. Number of cartoons contributed: 261.

Cyril Kenneth Bird  Born, London, December 17, 1887. Died, 1965. New Yorker work: 1 cartoon, March 28, 1925. Known professionally under the name Fougasse, Bird became art editor of Punch in 1937, and assumed the title of editor in 1949. Key book: The Good-Tempered Pencil, A Survey of Modern British and American Humorous Art (Max Reinhardt, 1956).

Helen Hokinson (above) Born, Illinois,1893; died, Washington, D.C., 1949. New Yorker work: 1925 -1949, with some work published posthumously. All of Hokinson’s collections are wonderful, but here are two favorites. Her first collection: So You’re Going To Buy A Book! (Minton, Balch & Co, 1931) and what was billed as “the final Hokinson collection”: The Hokinson Festival (Dutton & Co., 1956). According to a New Yorker document produced during Harold Ross’s editorship (1925-1951) rating their artists, Ms. Hokinson and Peter Arno occupied a special category unto themselves above all others.

The New York Times On William Steig’s Shrek

Shrek!: Steig, William, Steig, William: 9780312384494 ...

 

Here’s a welcome out-of-the-blue, awkwardly headlined New York Times article by Brian Raftery on William Steig and his most famous creation, Shrek.

“Nobody Once Told Him the World Was Gonna Meme Shrek” 

I have two bones to pick with this otherwise terrif piece — both concern “a thousand illustrations” found in this sentence:

“Steig began selling his art to publications including The New Yorker, to which he’d ultimately contribute more than a thousand illustrations.”

Bone #1: technically, “…more than a thousand…” is correct, but of the very few New Yorker cartoonists who have contributed 1000 or more cartoons to The New Yorker (approximately 20 something out of the approximately 850 cartoonists who have contributed since 1925), only four have contributed in the range of 2000: Steig, James Stevenson, Alan Dunn, and Lee Lorenz. A (perhaps weedsy) feat worth mentioning, at least here on the Spill.

Bone #2: cartoons are not illustrations, and illustrations are not cartoons. The New Yorker has had a 100 year practice of making sure the cartoons in the magazine do not refer to the accompanying text. Illustrations accompany and refer to accompanying text — cartoons do not. Cartoons stand alone — they are graphic islands.

William Steig’s A-Z Entry:

William Steig (photo above) Born in Brooklyn, NY, Nov. 14, 1907, died in Boston, Mass., Oct. 3, 2003. In a New Yorker career that lasted well over half a century and a publishing history that contains more than a cart load of books, both children’s and otherwise, it’s impossible to sum up Steig’s influence here on Ink Spill. He was among the giants of the New Yorker cartoon world, along with James Thurber, Saul Steinberg, Charles Addams, Helen Hokinson and Peter Arno. Lee Lorenz’s World of William Steig (Artisan, 1998) is an excellent way to begin exploring Steig’s life and work. New Yorker work: 1930 -2003.

With the arrival this week of the Armed Services edition of Thurber’s masterpiece, My Life And Hard Times, the Spill library has moved closer to a completing the Thurber Armed Services editions. Just The Thurber Carnival and Is Sex Necessary remain. All in good time! (I’m in no hurry).

Also this week

Some time back I posted the above photo of the well-used (tattered?) dust jacket covering my copy of Burton Bernstein’s Thurber: A Biography. I bought this copy in 1975, the year it was published, when I was in my last year of college, diving deep into The New Yorker‘s history. I’ve read Mr. Bernstein’s book through and through, again and again (and it shows). Each time the book comes off the shelf I imagine the jacket loses a small piece or two (I’ve been patching it for years).

Strolling through the internet the other day I was so pleased to see a copy of Mr. Bernstein’s book in near new condition (price paid: $3.85). My 51 year old copy can now take it easy; from now on this “new” one will do the heavy lifting.

James Thurber’s A-Z Entry

James Thurber Born, Columbus, Ohio, December 8, 1894. Died 1961, New York City. New Yorker work: 1927 -1961, with several pieces run posthumously. According to the New Yorker’s legendary editor, William Shawn, “In the early days, a small company of writers, artists, and editors — E.B. White, James Thurber, Peter Arno, and Katharine White among them — did more to make the magazine what it is than can be measured.”

Key cartoon collection: The Seal in the Bedroom and Other Predicaments (Harper & Bros., 1932). Key anthology (writings & drawings): The Thurber Carnival (Harper & Row, 1945). There have been a number of Thurber biographies. Exhibit Of Interest: Mick Stevens to Show Work On Martha’s Vineyard 

Mick Stevens, who began contributing to The New Yorker in December of 1979, tells the Spill that:

“There’s a show of a dozen or so of my older original New Yorker drawings here at The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse in Vineyard Haven. The show will run for the entire month of May. The artist will be lurking there from time to time.”

Now That’s An Album Of New Yorker Cartoons!

Every year, for the past three decades, I’ve returned to a place in Maine where the below copy of The New Yorker Album of Drawings 1925 -1975 resides.

I love my annual Pine Tree State revisiting of this collection as it was my very first deep dive into a concentrated New Yorker cartoon “Album” of drawings.

Looking through the Album now, with the astonishing variety of styles, of sensibilities, of cartoon “worlds” presented, I’m reminded of what an amazing cartoon education it gave me.

Carmine Peppe, who handled the layout (as he handled the layout of the magazine itself back then) had such a great eye for balancing the art. No drawing was treated incidentally, whether in the space granted, or how it related to the other drawings surrounding it.

When the Album was published, I was a college kid in my early twenties (already into my fourth year of being rejected by The New Yorker, with a couple more years of rejection ahead of me). I felt it then, looking through the book (as I feel it today), that this is inspiring work.
