KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — A man was found dead in a fire that destroyed five single-storey terrace houses along Jalan E5/11, Taman Ehsan Kepong, in Kepong, in the early hours of Thursday.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Assistant Director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the department received an emergency call at 2.31am, with the first engine from Selayang Fire and Rescue Station arriving at the scene about 19 minutes later, according to Astro Awani.

“The fire involved five Class A houses, each measuring 20 by 60 feet, with estimated destruction ranging between 20 per cent and 100 per cent. The fire was brought under control at 3.42am.

“At 4.29am, a male victim aged 53 was found burnt on a bed inside one of the bedrooms. He was confirmed dead at the scene,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

Ahmad Mukhlis said two vehicles — a Hyundai Getz and a Hyundai XG 250 — were also completely destroyed in the blaze.

He said one house was completely destroyed, two others were 80 per cent damaged, while the remaining two sustained about 20 per cent damage each.

He added that the firefighting operation involved personnel from Selayang Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by Rawang, Jinjang and Manjalara stations, with a total of 27 firefighters and several vehicles including Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), Water Tanker (WT), Compact Fire Rescue Tender (CFRT) and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS).

“The fire was fully extinguished at 7.15am and overhaul work is still being carried out to ensure there are no remaining fire sources that could reignite the blaze.

“The victim’s body has been handed over to police for further action. The cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation,” he said.

SINGAPORE: A rat infestation in parts of Tampines has raised concern among residents, with the town council removing 146 rats from Sections 7 and 8 in Tampines East as of April 23.

On Facebook, the Tampines Town Council shared updates about their control measures, and assured that they have heard the complaints of people and are taking the appropriate actions to take care of the problem.

Part of the process is the Town Council’s mitigating measures, which involve inspection to detect early signs of infestation, burrow treatment with rodenticide, culling near bins, and deployment of rodent traps.

The town council is also working on improving housekeeping. Measures include washing bins to remove food waste, ensuring bin lids are properly closed, and offering free bulky item removal to reduce clutter that could attract pests.

An upcoming food waste digester in N2 is also expected to help by reducing food odours and limiting accessible food sources for rodents.

Residents are being encouraged to do their part by disposing of waste properly and keeping bins clean and closed.

“Keeping rodents at bay requires everyone’s effort, and residents play an important role, too…Please dispose of waste properly and recycle food waste where possible. Every small action makes a difference in keeping our estate clean and liveable,” the Town Council declared in their post.

Aside from rats, birds are also causing stress to some local residents. In a recent report, crows nesting near Chinatown Complex have been attacking passersby, with more than 10 people affected in the past week.

Electric trucks in China surge as lower costs and charging network disrupt logistics

BEIJING, April 29 — At a dusty lot an hour outside Beijing, a steady stream of vehicles come and go for a quick battery charge — just one node in China’s rapidly expanding network of electric trucks.

While the country’s prowess in electric passenger vehicles has long been known globally, electric trucks have only recently gained traction.

Now powered by extensive charging and battery-swapping infrastructure, the cost structures clearly favour electric models, experts say, in a potentially fatal blow for conventional diesel rigs.

“Last year was the breakthrough for heavy electrified vehicles in China,” Lauri Myllyvirta, co-founder of the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air and expert on China’s energy consumption, told AFP.

“If the infrastructure is there, the economics are there for an increasing number of logistics routes and requirements,” he said.

Adoption of alternatives to diesel trucks in the world’s second-largest economy has noticeably accelerated in recent years.

New-energy models accounted for 29 per cent of all domestic truck sales in China last year, up from 14 per cent in 2024, according to data from Beijing-based market intelligence provider Commercial Vehicle World.

The penetration rate was less than one per cent as recently as 2021, according to the firm.

Manufacturers say they expect that share to continue swelling, potentially reaching a majority of sales in just a few years.

At the bustling charging station in Beijing’s Miyun District, 43-year-old truck driver Wang told AFP how his job had changed since he started driving an electric model last year.

“It’s such a breeze!” he said after plugging in the charging cables.

“My old vehicle had over 10 gears, and its operation was so cumbersome. But with this one, you don’t have to do a thing — it’s all automatic.”

‘All about speed’

Asked why he thought logistics firms like his were increasingly switching to electric trucks, Wang said it was a combination of national policies and simple market logic.

“It’s just survival of the fittest. Now, with freight expenses and everything, people are trying to earn a bit more, and this one has lower operating costs.”

Another driver at the charging station, surnamed Zhang, told AFP that he has been driving an electric truck for around two months after switching from one powered by natural gas.

His job mainly involves hauling sand and stone on short journeys around Beijing, Zhang told AFP, noting that the truck is not suited for longer shipments.

The new sky-blue model Zhang drives — made by the Howo brand of state-owned firm Sinotruk — has a maximum range of 240-250 kilometres (149–155 miles), he said.

“The power is pretty strong, the acceleration is fast. It’s all about speed, but the range is a bit lacking,” he said.

As domestic adoption of electric trucks picks up pace, Chinese firms are thinking more about overseas markets.

“Similar to passenger vehicles, China’s heavy truck manufacturers are beginning to view export markets as an inevitable strategy due to rising competition and the eventual saturation in the Chinese market,” said Christopher Doleman, an analyst at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.

‘Electric is superior’

Recent disruption in global energy markets as a result of the Middle East war is a “potential accelerant” for this trend, Doleman told AFP.

“There is likely to be higher demand for electric heavy-duty vehicles as fleet owners try to minimise their vulnerability to volatile diesel costs,” he said.

According to Han Wen, founder of electric truck start-up Windrose Technology, the war “already has” boosted demand.

Founded in 2022, Belgium-based Windrose is seeking to leverage China’s advanced EV supply chains to position itself in the emerging global long-haul electric truck market — competing with Tesla’s electric “Semi”.

“For trucks, range is by far the constraining factor,” Han told AFP, noting that Windrose trucks can currently drive about 700 kilometres on a full charge, with plans to extend that to 1,000 kilometres in 2030.

Having secured road approval across Europe, China, the United States and South America, Windrose is now looking to ramp up production.

“We’re going to build about 1,000 trucks this year,” Han said, followed by goals of 10,000 next year and 100,000 in 2030.

“Economically, there is no more question at all that electric is superior,” he added.

“I think we’re right on the cusp of a total obliteration of diesel trucks as a product category.” — AFP

Caught for trespass, spared prosecution: DPP orders release of ‘joget’ teens at Muhibbah LRT tracks in Bukit OUG to spare their future

28 April 2026 at 08:42

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — Two teenagers were detained for trespassing onto the LRT tracks at the Muhibbah station in Bukit OUG to dance the ‘joget’, before being released following a review of the case due to their age and future prospects.

Cheras District Police said the incident took place at about 11.52pm on April 25 and was detected via closed-circuit television footage showing one of the teenage boys entering the track at Platform 1 to ‘berjoget’.

The boys aged 16 and 17 were initially detained by auxiliary police before being handed over to Bukit Jalil police for investigation under Section 62 of the Railways Act 1991 for trespassing on the tracks.

They were remanded for two days before being released on police bail on April 26 after the investigation was completed.

“The investigation papers were briefed to the Deputy Public Prosecutor on April 28, 2026, who instructed that the suspects be released as both are juveniles and further action could affect their future,” the Cheras District Police said in a press statement today.

The trespass offence carries a fine or imprisonment for those convicted.

KOTA BHARU, April 26 — A 17-year-old male student sustained head and body injuries after falling into a well more than seven metres deep at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Falahiah, Wakaf Bharu, here today.

Wakaf Bharu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) operations commander Azmi Sulaiman said the department received an emergency call at 9.12am, prompting six personnel and a Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT) to be dispatched to the scene.

“The team arrived about 11 minutes later and found the victim inside the well. A rescue operation was immediately carried out using specialised equipment, including ropes and a ladder,” he told Bernama.

The victim, Wan Ahmad Mukhlis Wan Md Fadhli, was safely brought out with only minor injuries and handed over to medical personnel for further treatment.

Preliminary information indicated that the student had been sitting on a cement cover over the well, which gave way under his weight.

Azmi said the well was previously used as an underground water source by the school but had long been abandoned, adding that the operation ended at 10am. — Bernama

Malaysia’s Sivasangari battles past Orfi in five‑game squash thriller, books Grasshopper Cup showdown

26 April 2026 at 03:06

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — National women’s squash player S. Sivasangari delivered a magnificent display against Egypt’s Amina Orfi to book her spot in the final of the Grasshopper Cup 2026 in Zurich, Switzerland today.

The world number six and third seed pushed the top seed to her limits in an intense 81-minute battle at Zurich Main Station.

Sivasangari took the first game 11-7 but dropped the next two 5-11, 8-11 before fighting back strongly to seal victory with 11-9, 11-5.

The win marked only her second triumph over the 18-year-old Egyptian in nine meetings between the two players.

The 27-year-old will now aim to go one better than last year after finishing runner-up to Egypt’s Nouran Gohar in the same tournament.

She is set to face Japan’s Satomi Watanabe, the second seed, in the final. — Bernama
