Antonelli’s streak faces test as Ferrari pair Leclerc and Hamilton target Monaco win

MONACO, June 4 — Local hero Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are widely expected to end Ferrari’s long winless streak and finish Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli’s record streak in Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Leclerc, who this week agreed a contract extension with Ferrari, won his home race in 2024 and has claimed pole position three times in the last five years, but he was out-qualified and out-raced by a revived Hamilton, who finished second, in Montreal two weeks ago.

In Canada, Mercedes’ precocious championship leader reeled off a fourth consecutive win, including his maiden F1 triumph, to open a 43-point gap ahead of team-mate George Russell.

But, Antonelli admitted, he had enjoyed some luck and recognised too that Ferrari’s more nimble car and power unit were likely to be better suited to the classic Mediterranean street circuit where Mercedes have often struggled.

The Silver Arrows last won on the unforgiving barrier-lined streets of the principality in 2019 when Hamilton was on his way to his sixth title. It was his third Monaco win, the most by any current driver and he is relishing a return to one of his favourite circuits.

“It’s the one track we go to where power is not king,” he said. “It’s definitely about the car performance and our car could be really strong there.”

Antonelli, the boy prodigy mentored by Hamilton in his final days at Mercedes before moving to Ferrari last year, admitted: “I think Ferrari is the team to beat in Monaco. It’s going to be very interesting to see how we do there.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has played down their prospects of continued success.

“Monaco is different to all the other circuits and a car that has been competitive elsewhere is not guaranteed anything here,” he said.

“The margins are small, the consequences are high.”

Last year, Russell finished 11th and Antonelli 18th, a result that Mercedes will seek to avoid repeating as they defend their championship lead after five straight wins.

Qualifying the key

For Ferrari, it represents a chance to claim a first win since Carlos Sainz triumphed in Mexico in 2024 and to confirm their renaissance with a car well-conceived for the new hybrid era.

As always, Saturday’s qualifying session is likely to be a decisive factor, but many observers believe the “yo-yo” characteristic of this year’s racing — created by the use of a new overtake mode can create more possible overtaking moves in the race.

It gives a driver, who is within a second of another car, an extra 0.5 MJ of electrical energy from the power unit, which has a 50-50 division of traditional engine and battery.

Last year’s race saw world champion Lando Norris dominate with a classic hat-trick of pole position, victory and fastest lap for McLaren, the most successful team in Monaco with 16 wins since their F1 debut there in 1966.

The team hope to celebrate their 60th anniversary and 1000th race start by thwarting Ferrari and Mercedes, with Red Bull likely also to be in contention through not only Max Verstappen, a two-time Monaco winner, but also the talented French driver Isack Hadjar.

He was fifth on the grid last year for Racing Bulls and finished sixth in the race in what was an impressive rookie season.

The race has been shifted to a later date in the calendar, after traditionally occupying the Ascension Day weekend, and is the first of a run of six races in eight weeks with the teams moving on immediately to Barcelona.

BARCELONA, June 12 — Formula One leader Kimi Antonelli would like his towel back and social media is pointing the finger at Lewis Hamilton’s celebrity friend Kim Kardashian.

The Mercedes driver posted a cheeky reel on Instagram ahead of this weekend’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix asking his seven million followers if they knew the whereabouts of his Monaco Grand Prix winner’s towel.

Television images from after Sunday’s race in the principality appeared to show Kardashian, accompanying Ferrari driver Hamilton, picking the folded item off the number one marker and wiping her face and sunglasses before walking away with it.

“I was wondering. Have you seen my towel,” Antonelli asked in his video post, without naming anyone.

Teammate George Russell said he had not seen it, with Antonelli then washing his hands and asking the question again.

The 19-year-old Italian, Hamilton’s successor at Mercedes and winner of the last five races, was also questioned about it in a press conference at the Circuit de Catalunya.

“No, still looking for it,” he said when asked if he had found it.

Seven-times world champion Hamilton sounded puzzled when asked at a Ferrari press session whether he might be able to help Antonelli find the missing item.

“His towel?” asked the Briton, who finished second in the race. — Reuters

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Kim Kardashian has sent Mercedes Formula One driver Kimi Antonelli a personalised replacement towel after she unknowingly used his during last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The follow‑up gesture came after widespread social‑media attention on the incident, according to a report by ESPN.

Antonelli had posted a light‑hearted TikTok video repeatedly asking “where is my towel?”, a clip that quickly went viral and became part of the post‑race chatter.

Kardashian had been in the Monaco paddock to support Lewis Hamilton and was filmed wiping her face with a towel she did not realise belonged to Antonelli.

The Italian teenager appeared unfazed by the moment and went on to become the youngest winner of the Monaco Grand Prix, securing his sixth consecutive victory and extending his championship lead.

The towel exchange added a light comic footnote to a dominant weekend for Antonelli, who has emerged as one of the season’s standout performers.

George Russell claims pole for Barcelona GP as Hamilton stunts Antonelli’s front row bid

MONTMELÓ, June 14 — George Russell of Mercedes claimed pole position for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix after a thrilling end to the qualifying session on Saturday.

The Briton clinched his third pole of the season by finishing just 0.064 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton in his upgraded Ferrari, who bumped championship leader Kimi Antonelli in the other Mercedes on to the second row for Sunday’s race.

After a difficult outing in Monaco last weekend and a disappointing start to the campaign for the pre-season title favourite, Russell said it was good to “feel the groove” again as he secured a career 10th pole.

Antonelli has won the last five races and is aiming for a sixth on Sunday, but he will have to start from third after a superb late run from Hamilton.

The seven-time champion had endured a tough weekend but looked far quicker in qualifying and came extremely close to claiming pole himself.

It will be the first all-British front row in Barcelona.

“It’s been a great weekend so far, I’m always fighting. I came into this weekend with a clean slate, felt good and it is great to be on pole,” said Russell.

“It will be an interesting race tomorrow, Lewis did a great job to get up there so I’m sure there will be a fight. Tomorrow will not be easy.”

Antonelli has been dominant this season but admitted it was tough going for him at Montmelo.

“It’s been a little bit of a difficult weekend so far. I didn’t really have the feeling with the car,” he explained.

“The long run was strong yesterday but today I’ve been lacking a little bit, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

It seemed like McLaren were closest to challenging Mercedes this weekend but 2025 champion Lando Norris came in fourth and Oscar Piastri was seventh.

With track temperatures edging beyond 50 degrees centigrade tyre management was key, with the soft compound only good for one flying lap.

Max Verstappen moved top of the timesheets briefly in Q1 before Charles Leclerc laid down a benchmark of 1:15.964s.

Hamilton turns up

Antonelli fell just behind him but Russell replaced the Monegasque driver, and then Hamilton powered past him too in 1:15.625.

The Briton had toiled in the practice sessions as he worked to get to grips with Ferrari’s heavily upgraded car.

Lance Stroll triggered a brief yellow flag as he hit the gravel and both he and his Aston Martin team-mate, home favourite Fernando Alonso, will fill the back row on Sunday.

Williams’ Alex Albon, set to beat Nigel Mansell’s record of 95 Grand Prix starts for the team on Sunday, also failed to progress.

Drivers were in no hurry to emerge for Q2, but once the session came alive Verstappen again set the early running. Leclerc quickly usurped him, before being himself replaced by Russell with a time of 1:15.22.

Antonelli improved to third in Q2 while Nico Hulkenberg survived the cut after his first flying lap was erased for track limits, getting a second on the board late on.

In Q3 Leclerc spaked a red flag when he came off the track between turns four and five and hit the barriers, with the front wing of his car destroyed.

The medical car was deployed but the Ferrari driver, who also crashed in his home Monaco Grand Prix last weekend, was able to walk away from the incident.

Only Piastri and Verstappen had set lap times, leading to a gripping final eight minutes once racing resumed.

Antonelli took pole provisionally before Russell’s fastest time of 1:14.679 and Hamilton’s last gasp dart which means he starts the race in a Mercedes sandwich.

“I have no idea whether I will be able to keep up, we will find out tomorrow,” said Hamilton.

“All weekend we’ve been four tenths off, even with the upgrade, that’s where we thought we were.

“For us to be that close, less than a tenth between us, that’s a real showing of the hard work of everyone at the factory.” — AFP
