Genre: Mystery, Thriller
Country: United States, France
Language: English
Release Date: February 4, 1950 (United States)
Filming Location: Paris Studios Cinรฉma, Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine, France(Studio)
Synopsis:
In Paris, down and out medical student Johann Radek is paid by Bill Kirby to murder his wealthy aunt. A knife sharpener is the prime suspect, but Radek keeps taunting the police until they realize that he's the killer. The police and Inspector Maigret are led on a chase through the streets and over the rooftops of Paris and finally up the girders of the Eiffel Tower.
Reviews:
Franchot Tone plays Radek, a polymath psychopath who dresses like Charles Beaudelaire in post-WW2 Paris. He sits in the Deux Magots cafรฉ eating yoghurt until the day he's inspired to murder-for-profit. When he pins the crime on hapless Burgess Meredith (Heurtin), Charles Laughton (Inspector Maigret) battles to save the innocent man.
Adapted from Georges Simenon's 1931 novel, A Battle of Nerves (La Tรชte d'un homme), the 1948 film showcases a post-Nazi Paris, all of its splendid architecture intact, resuming its passion for fashion, art, food, and love. The location-shooting feels like a mini-travelogue and hints at the Nouvelle Vague just around the corner. Our attention is split between vintage Paris hotspots and a slow-chase bromance between two of Hollywood's greatest actors.
The film is of interest both as an historical document and an unsettling portrait of a murderer obsessed with the cop on his trail. There is so much authentic detail in every frame, so much nuance in the performances. Viewers expecting an action film, or the Hitchcock treatment, might be bored by this war of attrition between Maigret and Radek, but fans of Paris will relish the vicarious thrill of immersion in the city.

Synopsis:
A global war begins in 1940. This war drags out over many decades until most of the people still alive (mostly those born after the war started) do not even know who started it or why. Nothing is being manufactured at all anymore, and society has broken down into primitive localized communities. In 1966, a great plague wipes out most of what people are left but small numbers still survive. One day, a strange aircraft lands at one of these communities, and its pilot tells of an organization which is rebuilding civilization and slowly moving across the world re-civilizing these groups of survivors. Great reconstruction takes place over the next few decades, and society is once again great and strong. The world's population is now living in underground cities. In the year 2035, on the eve of man's first flight to the moon, a popular uprising against progress (which some people claim has caused the wars of the past) gains support and becomes violent.

Englishmen fighting Nazis in Africa discover an exotic mystery woman living among the natives and enlist her aid in overcoming the Germans.
Reviews:
"Interesting settings and a good cast contribute significantly to this solid drama about intrigue in the desert during the Second World War. In features Gene Tierney in a role that, while perhaps slightly oddly cast, makes particularly good use of her elegant beauty, and also gives her a good variety of material to work with.
The story starts with George Sanders, as a by-the-book British official, sent to take over a desert outpost previously run in a rather lax manner by Bruce Cabot's character. The two have to work out their disagreements over native policy while tracking down an Axis plot to supply arms to unfriendly natives. Tierney comes in as a half-Arab, half-English owner of an extensive trading network, bequeathed to her by her father. Both sides are naturally eager to have her work with them.
It's a good setup, and in general it makes good use of it. There are some good action scenes, but there is also some substance in the character development and in the cross-cultural interactions. The pace is steady, though it might miss a couple of good opportunities to switch into high gear, since there is never a feeling of any particular urgency until quite close to the end.
Sanders and Tierney are both in very good form, which is almost enough in itself to make the movie worth seeing. The story is good, and there is hardly a moment when something of interest is not going on."

Synopsis:
Gruff, hard-nosed new boss Stanton takes over a scientific research company upon the death of his benevolent father. Scientists Manning, Gordon and White, who are very close to a breakthrough in time travel, are told by Stanton they must have results in 24 hours or face a funding cut-off. Trying to push their equipment past its safe operating limit they travel into the far future and distant past, with Stanton along as an accidental participant, unaware that a surprise awaits them as they struggle to return to the present.
Reviews:
In the future all doors slide - this is a given fact of all SF movies from the days of Flash Gordon (possibly before that, it's a while since I've seen Metropolis) but this piece of junk goes one better than having the standard elevator sliding doors... the door of the "Time Vault" opens vertically as well as horizontally! it's the grooviest SF movie door since the The Monster from Morbius' Id came through the 'Krell metal' door in Forbidden Planet. I wonder where they stole it - because more time, effort, and invention went into making that door than into the whole of the rest of the movie put together and believe me it's the only reason to watch this really stupendously awful film.
Having said all that I am giving it a 9 because it deserves more recognition as a classic bad SF film. It is up there with the Ed Woods. If you are in the mood for a masochistic do-it-yourself trepanning /lobotomy type movie then this is the one for you. It's great.

Synopsis:
In San Francisco, successful self-made businessman Walter Williams has just bought three factories in Denver with the approval of the board of directors. His wife Irene tells him that she is not feeling well enough to travel with him and asks him to give a lift to her cousin Jim Torrence. On the highway, Jim--who is actually Irene's lover--tries to kill Walter, hitting his head and throwing him off a cliff, and has a fatal fiery accident while escaping driving Walter's car. Walter is believed to be the driver and later his wife is sent to jail accused of plotting his murder. Meanwhile, the wounded Walter falls asleep in a moving van and eventually winds up in Larkspur, a small town in Idaho. He is hired as a mechanic in a gas station by the owner, Marsha Peters. For three months Walter reads the news, expecting revenge with Irene sentenced to death, and he and Marsha fall in love with each other. When Walter discloses the truth to Marsha, she convinces him to return to San Francisco and save his unfaithful wife. The situation changes when Irene accuses him of plotting to kill her lover Jim, and Walter must prove his innocence.
Reviews:
Loved this film! Bodacious Brian Donlevy shows his sentimental side (again) I so rarely see that in his films. He is usually ruthless - but his soft side makes him even more sexy! Ella Raines is as beautiful and enchanting as always - she made far too few films. They are surrounded by a great supporting cast.
Is it just me, or did Helen Walker remind anyone else of Joan Bennett in this film?! I kept seeing a blonde Joan in so many long shots and questioned whether this was her or not - even though I knew it wasn't.
And the legendary Anna May Wong! This was my first time seeing one of her films!
