The crude oil market has gone from a substantial surplus that forced the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to curb its own output to prevent prices from plummeting, to a critical situation: overnight, with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, almost a fifth of global production has vanished. Nearly half of that amount has been offset, both by increased shipments through the few pipelines connecting the Persian Gulf countries to the outside world and by the still-nascent production increases at fossil fuel giants outside the region. But the shortfall remains enormous.

Ugandans slam bill as mimicking Russian 'foreign agents' law

A proposed law critics say is designed to crush dissent is sparking growing outrage in Uganda. The bill seeks to criminalise anything promoting the "interests of a foreigner" and would allow anyone receiving money from abroad to be labelled a "foreign agent". In a press conference Monday, civil society organisations said the legislation replicates similars used in Russia.

UAE says oil facility hit by Iranian drone strike as attacks resume

The United Arab Emirates said Monday it came under attack by Iran for the first time since a fragile ceasefire took hold in early April, accusing Iran of sparking a fire at a key oil facility in a drone strike. The UAE Defense Ministry also said Iran had launched four cruise missiles, with three shot down and one falling into the sea.

WHO confirms two hantavirus cases aboard cruise ship, suspects human transmission

The World Health Organization on Tuesday said it had confirmed two hantavirus cases and suspected five others among people on a cruise ship stuck off Cape Verde. The WHO added that there may be some human-to-human transmission ​happening ‌between ⁠close contacts on board the ‌stricken cruise ship, though the risk to the wider ⁠public remained low.
