The president has clearly lost the plot of what has become a staggeringly expensive conflict without any clear strategic goal.

What happened on Saturday was no conspiracy. It was a potential tragedy fueled by a cultural fixation on conspiracy theories and prevented by the quick actions of the Secret Service. 

Most Americans know that the MAGA right is crazy. What’s more interesting is what motivated so many former Trump cronies to turn on him with such unexpected venom.
