Synopsis:

Reviews:
The Director is so at home with this sort of stuff. That is Characters, their faces and their World gone wrong predicaments. This study of Men in the Korean War Conflict is a scathing, gritty, realism counterpointed by a slight Artistic Touch.

It has a fine cast with standouts all around, led by one of the Screen's most intense Actors, Robert Ryan. Fans of War Movies may find this a bit too Psychological with its lack of Action made more intense by a claustrophobic feeling of closed quarters in a wide open landscape.

The Camera lingers and the perspective is odd giving this a phantasmagorical feel. Things seem real but not really. This becomes, at times, unbearably Suspenseful and that's what its all about. Men in War and that's not a comfortable thing. Neither is this Movie and that's the point.

The Korean Conflict, as this Movie illustrates, was an unsettling and confusing inclusion that was a hard fit for America's usual clear and decisive fight for Freedom. It foreshadowed a forever blurring line that would Haunt our Military to this day. From this point on there was no longer a sharp Good vs Evil template that could be embraced by everyone, no matter Ideology or Political leaning.

Synopsis:

Enjoyed viewing this 1945 film and was surprised to see Jimmy Lydon,(Paul Cartwright), star of all the "Henry Aldrich Films of 1943", who gave an outstanding role as a young man who experienced dreams that could help his mother from getting involved with a man called Brett Curtis(Warren William),"Fear", who wanted so desperately to marry his mother and enjoy the great riches she possessed. Regis Toomey, (Dr. Martin Vincent),was the only person Paul Cartwright could turn to with all his troubling dreams and did his very best to find out the real mystery to his nightmares. Paul Cartwright was placed in a mental institution and notice there was two-way mirrors in his room and tried to hang his clothing over the mirrors to prevent his being spied on. If you like a good 1940's mystery from the past, you will enjoy viewing this great Classic Film!

Synopsis:
In San Francisco, successful self-made businessman Walter Williams has just bought three factories in Denver with the approval of the board of directors. Loved this film! Bodacious Brian Donlevy shows his sentimental side (again) I so rarely see that in his films. He is usually ruthless - but his soft side makes him even more sexy! Ella Raines is as beautiful and enchanting as always - she made far too few films. They are surrounded by a great supporting cast.

Is it just me, or did Helen Walker remind anyone else of Joan Bennett in this film?! I kept seeing a blonde Joan in so many long shots and questioned whether this was her or not - even though I knew it wasn't.

And the legendary Anna May Wong! This was my first time seeing one of her films!

He sits in the Deux Magots café eating yoghurt until the day he's inspired to murder-for-profit. When he pins the crime on hapless Burgess Meredith (Heurtin), Charles Laughton (Inspector Maigret) battles to save the innocent man.

Adapted from Georges Simenon's 1931 novel, A Battle of Nerves (La Tête d'un homme), the 1948 film showcases a post-Nazi Paris, all of its splendid architecture intact, resuming its passion for fashion, art, food, and love. The location-shooting feels like a mini-travelogue and hints at the Nouvelle Vague just around the corner. Our attention is split between vintage Paris hotspots and a slow-chase bromance between two of Hollywood's greatest actors.

The film is of interest both as an historical document and an unsettling portrait of a murderer obsessed with the cop on his trail. There is so much authentic detail in every frame, so much nuance in the performances. Viewers expecting an action film, or the Hitchcock treatment, might be bored by this war of attrition between Maigret and Radek, but fans of Paris will relish the vicarious thrill of immersion in the city.

Considering Mark Stevens starred and directed this it is extremely impressive. The tracking shots of him running, the overall framingl; they all look fantastic. I don't know how large Ketchikan is in real life but the way it is framed in this film makes it feel so sprawling, alleyways and populated locales all paint this city as a large frontier instead of the usual small town America. Pretty great film noir, definitely should be discussed more.

A global war begins in 1940. This war drags out over many decades until most of the people still alive (mostly those born after the war started) do not even know who started it or why. THINGS TO COME was an ambitious undertaking at the time, not only in its subject matter - that of predicting 100 years into the future - but also in its cinematic creation. This was the first time that a noted author was directly involved in every aspect of adapting one of his novels for the screen. Wells collaborated closely with everyone; from producer Alexander Korda and director William Cameron Menzies, to set designer Vincent Korda and composer Arthur Bliss, to cinematographer Georges Perinal and special effects supervisor Ned Mann. While there were clashes over creative control, everyone's contribution remains intact making THINGS TO COME a testament to their considerable talents.

There are those who find fault with the rather cold demeanor of several characters in THINGS TO COME, but I disagree; technological advancement has its obvious advantages, but it can also bring about a decline in emotional interaction. Indeed, there's already some indication of this in our current tech-obsessed, insatiable society. I like how the characters stand for certain types, symbols if you will, rather than individual personalities. THINGS TO COME is a broad, visionary tale with a message, not a character study.

The visual design, even today, is stunning, and when combined with that terrific music, it all produces a unique and memorable film experience. It anticipates by thirty-two years "things to come" with Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (MGM, 1968).

Synopsis:
Gruff, hard-nosed new boss Stanton takes over a scientific research company upon the death of his benevolent father. Scientists Manning, Gordon and White, who are very close to a breakthrough in time travel, are told by Stanton they must have results in 24 hours or face a funding cut-off. Trying to push their equipment past its safe operating limit they travel into the far future and distant past, with Stanton along as an accidental participant, unaware that a surprise awaits them as they struggle to return to the present.

Reviews:
In the future all doors slide - this is a given fact of all SF movies from the days of Flash Gordon (possibly before that, it's a while since I've seen Metropolis) but this piece of junk goes one better than having the standard elevator sliding doors... the door of the "Time Vault" opens vertically as well as horizontally! it's the grooviest SF movie door since the The Monster from Morbius' Id came through the 'Krell metal' door in Forbidden Planet. I wonder where they stole it - because more time, effort, and invention went into making that door than into the whole of the rest of the movie put together and believe me it's the only reason to watch this really stupendously awful film.

Having said all that I am giving it a 9 because it deserves more recognition as a classic bad SF film. It is up there with the Ed Woods. If you are in the mood for a masochistic do-it-yourself trepanning /lobotomy type movie then this is the one for you. It's great.

Synopsis:
In San Francisco, successful self-made businessman Walter Williams has just bought three factories in Denver with the approval of the board of directors. Reviews:
Loved this film! Bodacious Brian Donlevy shows his sentimental side (again) I so rarely see that in his films. He is usually ruthless - but his soft side makes him even more sexy! Ella Raines is as beautiful and enchanting as always - she made far too few films. They are surrounded by a great supporting cast.

Is it just me, or did Helen Walker remind anyone else of Joan Bennett in this film?! I kept seeing a blonde Joan in so many long shots and questioned whether this was her or not - even though I knew it wasn't.

And the legendary Anna May Wong! This was my first time seeing one of her films!
