Victorian Society publishes list of most endangered buildings in England and Wales

Tees Transporter Bridge and a former working men’s club in Barrow-in-Furness among sites at risk of decay or neglect

Teesside’s Transporter Bridge, a disinfecting station in Hackney and a former working men’s club in Barrow-in-Furness have been included on a list ringing alarm bells for Victorian and Edwardian heritage.

The Victorian Society has published its annual top 10 endangered buildings list, intended as a way of drawing national attention to at-risk places in England and Wales.

Call for UK gambling reform after ‘generous and caring’ woman takes her own life

Ellen Mulvey ran up huge betting losses online and wrote ‘addiction is the worst disease’ before she died

A family is calling for wholesale reform of the gambling industry after an inquest heard details of the life and death of Ellen Mulvey, a “generous and caring” woman with a high-flying City job who also had a secret addiction.

Mulvey’s family believe she lost hundreds of thousands of pounds gambling without their knowledge, first via mainstream operators and then on unlicensed platforms.

Baby boy found dead wrapped in newspaper from 1910 is laid to rest

Mystery of who the child known as Baby Auckland was and how he died has not been solved

A baby boy whose skeletal remains were found wrapped in a 1910 newspaper and with twine around his neck has, finally, been laid to rest.

The child has become known as Baby Auckland after he was found at a property in the centre of Bishop Auckland, County Durham.

Boy died aged 13 months after ‘routine abuse’ by Jamie Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, jury hears

A baby boy was “routinely ill-treated, sexually abused and physically assaulted” before he was killed by a secondary school teacher adopting him, a jury has heard.

Jamie Varley, the teacher, 37, and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, were in the process of adopting Preston Davey.
