  • Film show: French stars set to sparkle at Cannes Manon Kerjean
We look ahead to some of the French films making a splash on the Riviera at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, as Manon Kerjean takes us through some of the home-grown talent gracing the red carpet this year. She tells us why opening feature "The Electric Kiss" strikes the right tone with its bittersweet, supernatural elements and how Arthur Harari's "The Unknown" has revisited the body-swap genre with panache.

France is reopening a probe into the alleged role Rwanda’s former first lady, 83-year-old Agathe Habyarimana, played in the 1994 genocide in which around 800,000 people, mainly ethnic Tutsis, were killed. Last year, the case against the late ex-president’s wife was dismissed due to "insufficient evidence", but on Wednesday a French appeals court overturned the ruling.

Israeli court rejects appeal by detained Gaza aid flotilla activists

6 May 2026 at 13:49
An Israeli court on Wednesday rejected an appeal by two foreign nationals, one Spanish and one Brazilian, challenging their detention in Israel. The two men were seized in international waters last week while participating in a humanitarian aid flotilla seeking to break Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip. The ruling means an earlier decision extending their detention remains in place.

Nearly 600,000 Venezuelans in limbo after losing temporary protected status

6 May 2026 at 13:24
In 2025, the US Supreme Court provisionally authorised the Trump administration to lift Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans living in the United States. This status had allowed them to work legally and remain in the country as long as their return to Venezuela was deemed dangerous. Nearly 600,000 people now live in a state of profound legal uncertainty. FRANCE 24's Fanny Allard and Fraser Jackson report from Florida.
