On Mother’s Day, 10 May 1942, in the midst of the turmoil of war, one of the most exceptional Mother’s Days in Finnish history was observed. On that day, Field Marshal C.G.E. Mannerheim issued an Order of the Day in which he expressed his gratitude to all Finnish mothers and awarded them collectively the Cross of Liberty, an honour unique on a global scale.

Mannerheim understood that the front could not endure on the battlefield alone. On the home front, mothers carried families, homes and the entire society through the most difficult years. Many performed heavy farm labour, cared for children, and lived in constant uncertainty while their loved ones served at the front.

The Order of the Day stated:

“To the mothers of Finland!

As we this year celebrate the second Sunday of May as a day dedicated to the mothers of Finland, the defenders of our Fatherland on the battlefields fall silent with solemn minds and deep love in their hearts, remembering you, mothers.

You have given much to this country. From the cradle onwards, you have raised the generation through which this land is free. During our ongoing struggle for freedom - while your husbands fight at the front - you are raising in your homes a new generation for the Fatherland, who may be allowed to cultivate and build this country under more peaceful conditions than the present generation has been given.

Through your work and prayers during these years of struggle, you have supported your sons and daughters standing guard in defence of our country. From these loved ones, you have had to part for the sake of the nation during our time of trial. Your blessing has followed your children to the battlefields and given them the strength of heroism in the defence of the Fatherland and in securing lasting peace. On this day, I wish to extend my greetings and my deepest sympathy especially to those Finnish mothers whose dearest ones, as heroes, have sacrificed their lives for the Fatherland and its future.

The work of all of you has been, and is, immeasurably great in our nation’s struggle, and your sacrifice beyond measure.

In the name of the Finnish Army, as a sign of great gratitude and respect, I hereby award to the mothers of our Fatherland, collectively,

THE CROSS OF LIBERTY.

May it serve for future generations as a symbol of the sacred duty of a mother to raise in the children of this nation a burning will for freedom, which for all time shall safeguard the dearly won independence of our land and the inner greatness of our people.”

The wall of the Lotta canteen is adorned with the Field Marshal of Finland’s Order of the Day to the mothers of Finland. An honour guard stands beside the plaque.

Äitienpäivänä 10.5.1942, keskellä sodan melskeitä, vietettiin poikkeuksellista äitienpäivää Suomen historiassa. Tuona päivänä sotamarsalkka C.G.E. Mannerheim antoi päiväkäskyn, jossa hän osoitti kiitollisuutensa kaikille Suomen äideille ja myönsi heille Vapaudenristin, kunnianosoituksen, joka oli ainutlaatuinen koko maailman mittakaavassa.

Mannerheim ymmärsi, ettei rintama kestänyt yksin sotatantereella. Kotirintamalla äidit kannattelivat perheitä, koteja ja koko yhteiskuntaa vaikeimpien vuosien läpi. Monet tekivät raskaita maatilan töitä, huolehtivat lapsista ja elivät jatkuvan epävarmuuden keskellä samalla, kun omat läheiset olivat rintamalla.

Viettäessämme tänä vuonna toukokuun toista sunnuntaita Suomen äideille omistettuna merkkipäivänä isänmaamme puolustajat hiljenevät sodan kentillä hartain mielin ja syvä rakkaus rinnassaan muistamaan Teitä, äidit.

Te olette paljon antaneet tälle maalle. Te olette kehdosta alkaen kasvattaneet sen polven, jonka ansiosta maa on vapaa. Parhaillaan käytävän vapaustaistelumme aikana - miestenne taistellessa rintamalla - Te kasvatatte kodeissa isänmaalle uutta polvea, jonka sallittakoon viljellä ja rakentaa tätä maata rauhallisemmissa oloissa kuin mitä nykyinen polvi on saanut tehdä.

Töin ja rukouksin Te olette näinä taistelun vuosina tukeneet puolustusvartiossa seisovia poikianne ja tyttäriänne. Näistä rakkaistanne Teidän on ollut luovuttava maan hyväksi kansamme koettelemuksen ajaksi. Teidän siunauksenne on seurannut lapsianne taistelukentille ja antanut heille sankariuden voimaa isänmaan pelastamiseksi ja kestävän rauhan turvaamiseksi. Tahdon tänä päivänä erikseen lausua tervehdykseni ja syvän osanottoni niille Suomen äideille, joiden rakkaimmat sankareina ovat uhranneet henkensä isänmaan ja sen tulevaisuuden puolesta.

Kaikkien teidän työnne on ja on ollut kansamme taisteluissa arvioimattoman suuri ja uhrinne mittaamaton.

Suomen armeijan nimessä, suuren kiitollisuuden ja kunnioituksen osoituksena annan tänä päivänä Isänmaamme äideille yhteisesti omistettuna

VAPAUDENRISTIN.

Olkoon se tuleville sukupolville tunnuskuvana äidin pyhästä kutsumuksesta kasvattaa tämän kansan lapsiin palava vapaudentahto, joka ikuisiksi ajoiksi on turvaava maallemme kalliisti lunastetun itsenäisyyden ja kansallemme sisäisen suuruuden.
