says the sign above the steps. It didn't look like anyone was in and I didn't feel like investigating. My stomach was growling and Bronco Billy's Pizza Palace isn't far away in Niles.

The final wide stretch of the trail in the SF Water District land takes us to a short single track section of the trail leading to a gate by the crosswalk on Calaveras Road. From there, crossing the road, we'll be in Sunol Regional Wilderness. The rest of the way back is mostly on single track trail.

We went as far as the junction with Laurel Loop Trail in Mission Peak Regional Preserve before turning back. It was a good climb.

and the beginning.
The road end of the trail begins in Lexington Reservoir County park and goes 0.7 miles before the trail enters Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. Without signage you'd never know there was a change along the way.
