Esthwaite Water, English Lake District.

Another shot from my morning at Esthwaite Water. After bagging the obvious shot across the lake with colour in the sky as the sun rose I walked along the trail that loops around the lakes northern shore, waiting for the sun to breach the ridge to the east. There was a bit of time to find compositions, the pressure off because I was sure I had already got some decent shots. As the mist ebbed and flowed on the opposite side of the lake I managed to find a number of compositions that took advantage of the reed beds on my side of the lake that stood in relief to the misty trees. Then the sun began to warm the mist up, magic!

A fantastic mornings photography, one I had all to myself.

The Ojibwe Horse, also known as the Lac La Croix Indian Pony (bebezhigooganzhii, mishdatim) and Lac La Croix “Indian” or “Indigenous” pony is a semi-feral Canadian horse breed developed by the Ojibwe people. The population became critically low; and, by 1977, only four mares remained. To preserve the breed, these mares were crossed with Spanish Mustang stallions. The modern breed name derives from the Lac La Croix First Nation of Ontario, where the horses were last found in the wild. Historically, the breed was also found in Minnesota.

Today, it remains a critically endangered breed; there are about 200 horses located in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia in Canada, as well as Minnesota and Wisconsin in the United States. The breed registry is maintained by the Ojibwe Horse Society, a registered Canadian not-for-profit.

The sexes are similar, with males (as on the right in this image) being generally brighter and with a whiter face. The second part of the scientific name alludes to the whistling call, typical of the two other Wigeon species, American Wigeon and Eurasian Wigeon.
