SAHIWAL: A woman and her daughter suffered severe burn injuries after her husband and brother-in-law allegedly doused them with petrol and set them ablaze in Shadman Colony on Friday afternoon.

Rescue 1122 shifted the injured mother and daughter to Sahiwal Teaching Hospital for treatment. Eyewitnesses said the fire also destroyed household furniture and utensils before the suspects fled the scene.

Reports said Sobia Parveen, sister of complainant Muhammad Bilal and a resident of Vehari City, married Shaban Bhatti of Chak 65/5-L, Tehsil Sahiwal, around 15 years ago. The couple has five children.

Police said domestic violence had reportedly persisted throughout the marriage, with Sobia allegedly subjected to frequent abuse and severe beatings by her husband and brother-in-law. A few months ago, she left her husband’s home due to the continued violence and started living in a rented house near Shadman Chowk along with her children. She had been working as a domestic help to support the family.

On Friday, Shaban and his brother, Muhammad Azim, allegedly barged into the rented house, poured petrol on Sobia and one of her daughters, and set them on fire. The suspects also allegedly torched household belongings before escaping.

Neighbours informed Rescue 1122, which rushed the victims to Sahiwal Teaching Hospital.

Farid Town police registered a case against Shaban Bhatti and Muhammad Azim under sections 336, 324, and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Muhammad Bilal.

Police had yet to arrest the suspects till the filing of the report.

RAPE SUSPECTS HELD: Police claimed on Saturday to have arrested two suspects who allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl at village 18/11-L, Tehsil Pakpattan on Friday.

Reports said parents of the girl ‘N’ had gone to visit their ailing parents at 90 Mor. During their absence, suspects ‘A’ of Khanewal and ‘Nv’ of Burewala allegedly forced their entry into the house and raped the girl. They made a video and took away Rs100,000. On the complaint of the girl’s father, Saddar Police Chichawatni registered a case under Section 375A of the Pakistan Penal Code and arrested the suspects.

Underage marriage bid: Yousafwala Police foiled an attempted child marriage in Masoo Colony on Friday night and arrested the bridegroom, his father, and the bride’s father.

Eyewitnesses said the Nikah Khwan and several other participants fled the scene when police arrived at the wedding venue.

Reports said Imran Mughal, a resident of Chak 80, was arranging the marriage of his underage daughter, Mariam, to Ahsan Ali, a resident of Kaur. The wedding procession had reached Shadman Town when police received information regarding the bride’s age.

Acting on the tip-off, police raided the venue and arrested the bride’s father, Imran Mughal, the bridegroom, Ahsan Ali, and his father, Muhammad Rafiq.

A case was registered under Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance, 2026, on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Imtiaz Ali.

Police said the three suspects were booked and shifted to lock-up, while raids were being conducted at different locations to arrest the Nikah Khwan and other participants who escaped during the raid.

ARRESTED: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) for taking Rs15,000 bribe in connection with the registration of a case with Yousafwala Police.

According to the report, Allah Dita, a resident of Chak 96/9-L, approached his old friend Abdul Qayyum, ASI at Civil Lines Police, seeking assistance in registering a criminal case.

Qayyum claimed that the SHO of Yousafwala was his friend and assured him that the case would be registered, but demanded Rs30,000. The deal was eventually settled at Rs15,000. Allah Dita reported the matter to the ACE that conducted a raid and recovered Rs15,000.

Subsequently, a case was registered against Abdul Qayyum on the complaint of Allah Dita.

MITHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday ordered strict action against the culprits who allegedly gouged out both eyes of a female camel after subjecting the animal to severe torture in a Tharparkar village a day earlier.

“Cruelty against voiceless animals is unacceptable under any circumstances,” the CM said, and described the incident as an inhumane act.

He also directed Tharparkar’s livestock department to ensure immediate veterinary treatment of the camel.

He sought a report on the incident from the Mirpurkhas DIG.

MPA Surendar Valasai also asked the area police to take immediate action against those involved in the incident.

Owner of the camel, Sarang Neelo Meghwar, had on Monday complained to locals and journalists outside the Chachro Press Club that a group of unruly men belonging to the Rind community attacked the animal without any reason in his village, Baghal Rind, located in Dahli taluka.

He had brought the seriously injured camel to the press club. His children and some women family members also accompanied him.

“They started beat up the camel and continued with the inhuman treatment until they gouged out both eyes of the animal at the behest of an influential figure of their community, living in the neighbouring village,” he alleged.

His ordeal prompted protests by local civil society activists in Chachro and an uproar on social media platforms.

“The suspects are threatening us with dire consequences if we approached police or any other authority for action against them,” he said.

Mr Meghwar appealed to the authorities concerned and animal rights organisations to ensure a probe into the incident and action against those involved in the inhuman act.

TOBA TEK SINGH: Jhang police arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the kidnap and death of a first-year college student in the city. Jhang District Police Officer Sajid Hussain had taken notice of the incident and formed a special team that arrested the suspects.

On June 7, information was received on 15 that a young girl had been admitted to a private hospital in a critical condition while the people who brought her to the hospital fled the scene.

The 17-year-old girl was later identified. Police arrested the suspects and also confiscated the vehicle in which they had dropped the victim to hospital.

A kidnap case was already registered with the Satellite Town Police Station.

According to the statement of the main suspect, the girl’s health suddenly deteriorated and she was shifted to the hospital for treatment. However, the investigation is underway to find out all the facts of the incident.

DPO Sajid Hussain said every aspect of the case was being examined carefully and the evidence was being collected.

Sources revealed that after abduction, the girl was gang-raped by three suspects at the house of a relative of the main suspect and she was administered ice due to which her condition deteriorated. She was brought to the hospital in an unconscious condition.

PROTEST: Students of Jhang Nursing College and Midwifery and LHV School staged a protest demonstration in the DHQ hospital over humiliation and misbehaviour of the attendants of the injured persons of an accident three days ago.

The protesters apprised reporters that they were not directly responsible for patient care and they were tasked with only assisting doctors and nurses as a part of their training. They claimed that a written complaint was filed by them to the MS but no action had so far been taken.

Assistant Commissioner Rab Nawaz visited the hospital and assured the students that a transparent inquiry would be launched and action would be taken accordingly. At this, the protesters ended their protest.

ACCIDENT: A woman died and her husband received serious injuries when a speeding tractor-trolley ran over their motorcycle near Chak 15 railway crossing in Mian Channu tehsil of Khanewal.

The deceased was identified as Irshad Bibi (50) while her injured spouse was Abdul Khaliqdad (52).

Bus fire: A bus going from Karachi to Islamabad caught fire due to a short circuit near Shorkot on M-4 on Tuesday.

According to the spokesperson for the National Highway & Motorway Police, the patrol team evacuated all 34 passengers, staff and their luggage and no one was injured.

Immediately after the incident, the Motorway Police, Rescue 1122 and FWO staff jointly controlled the fire.

The bus was completely gutted.

SWABI: Journalist Yasir Ayaz, who went missing from Islamabad four days ago, was recovered here on Tuesday, police officials said.

Officials stated that Mr. Ayaz contacted his father from an unknown number, informing him that he was in the Baraqai area of Swabi district.

When contacted, the incharge of Mansoori police post, Waleed Khan, told Dawn that he was in the Charbagh area when he was informed that an unconscious man had been found near the police post.

He was brought to the police post in a critical condition. However, when his condition improved he told that he was a journalist. “He was extremely nervous and unable to speak. We immediately took him to a private hospital in the Gohati area for a medical check-up.

He was brought back to the police post as his condition improved,” the police official said.

Later, he contacted his family and as soon as the information was received, reporters from the private TV channel he works for reached Swabi, while his brother and other family members also arrived at the Mansoori police post.

He said it was not known who the assailants were who had abducted him from Islamabad and it was not immediately clear how Mr Ayaz was brought to the Baraqai area and for what purpose.

Journalist Yasir Ayaz went missing from the jurisdiction of Aabpara police station in Islamabad on June 5, after which his whereabouts remained unknown.

He belongs to the Mansehra district and works as a journalist in Islamabad.

The district police handed over the recovered journalist to Islamabad police, who then took him back to the capital.

SWAT: An ice drug addict killed his wife in the Balasor Chuprial area of Swat on Saturday, residents said.

They said that the suspect had a history of drug addiction and had reportedly been arrested and jailed multiple times in narcotics-related cases. On the day of the incident, the woman was reportedly on her way to seek medical treatment. Her 17-year-old son had given her money for the treatment expenses, they said.

The residents alleged that when the woman reached near a graveyard, her husband attempted to take the money from her. When she refused, insisting that the money was needed for her treatment, the suspect allegedly attacked and killed her before fleeing with the cash.

The couple’s three-year-old daughter was also present at the scene.

According to a resident who was among the first to arrive after hearing the child crying, the young girl was found sitting beside her mother’s body, clutching her mother’s shoes and crying inconsolably.

The witness said he carried the child home, but throughout the journey she refused to let go of her mother’s slippers.

Community members said the tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for society and authorities regarding the growing menace of drug abuse. They warned that unless effective measures were taken to curb the spread of ice drug and other narcotics, even more devastating incidents could occur in the future.

The residents urged law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts against drug trafficking and addiction.

The Matta police registered a case against the suspected killer and started a search for him.
