MetMalaysia confirms no tsunami threat after 5.2 quake off Mindanao

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13Β  β€”Β A moderate earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Mindanao, the Philippines, at 10.05 am today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (km), about 101 km south of Koronadal City.

β€œInitial assessments found no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” MetMalaysia said in a statement.

The latest quake comes days after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Philippines, affecting hundreds of thousands of people in Mindanao, with tremors felt in parts of Tawau and Semporna in Sabah.

As of Thursday, the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 47 deaths, 31 people missing and more than 346,000 affected by the disaster. β€” Bernama

MetMalaysia: Thunderstorms, heavy rain to hit Perlis, Penang, parts of Kedah and Johor until noon today

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 β€” The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for Perlis, Penang, and parts of Kedah and Johor, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until noon today.

In a post on its official Facebook page this morning, MetMalaysia said the warning covers the entire state of Perlis as well as several districts in Kedah, namely Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Yan, Pendang and Kuala Muda.

The warning also extends to the whole of Penang and parts of Johor, involving Tangkak, Muar and Batu Pahat.

MetMalaysia said the warning, issued at 8.35am, was based on weather conditions indicating thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 millimetres per hour, or expected to persist for more than an hour.

The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts that are valid for no more than six hours from the time they are issued.

Members of the public are advised to stay updated through MetMalaysia’s official channels and take necessary precautions during adverse weather conditions.

MetMalaysia warns of thunderstorms, heavy rain in seven states until 7pm

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 β€” The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds expected to hit several areas across seven states until 7pm today.

MetMalaysia, in a statement today, said weather conditions are expected throughout Perlis, while in Pahang, they will affect Cameron Highlands.

The weather is also forecast for Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, and Sik in Kedah; as well as Larut, Matang and Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, and Kampar in Perak.

In Terengganu, the affected areas comprise Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun, and Kemaman.

Meanwhile, in Sabah, a similar warning was issued for the West Coast (Ranau and Kota Belud); Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran, and Sandakan) and Kudat, while in Sarawak it involves Mukah (Mukah), Bintulu, Miri (Subis, Beluru, Miri, and Marudi) and Limbang. β€” Bernama

Heavy rain, strong winds on the way: Thunderstorm warning in effect for Johor, Pahang, Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 β€” The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several districts across Pahang, Johor, and Sarawak, cautioning residents to expect heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms through 3 pm today.

The warning, issued at 1:05 pm, covers the following areas:

  • Pahang: Rompin
  • Johor: Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai, and Kota Tinggi
  • Sarawak: Sri Aman; Betong (Pusa, Saratok, and Kabong); Sarikei; Mukah (Tanjung Manis, Daro, Matu, and Dalat); and Miri

MetMalaysia triggers a thunderstorm warning when rainfall intensity is forecast to exceed 20 millimetres per hour, either imminently or for a sustained period of more than one hour.

Such warnings are short-term advisories with a maximum validity of six hours from issuance.

Residents and travellers in the affected areas are advised to remain indoors where possible, avoid low-lying and flood-prone zones, and stay clear of open areas, tall trees, and bodies of water during active lightning activity.

The warning remains in effect until 3:00 pm. Members of the public may monitor updated weather advisories via the MetMalaysia official website at www.met.gov.my or through the myCuaca mobile application.
