Bank of Bodie, Bodie State Historic State Park, Mono County California

Bank of Bodie, Bodie State Historic State Park, Mono County California

The town is named for W.S. Body (or Bodey), who had discovered small amounts of gold in hills north of Mono Lake. In 1875, a mine cave-in revealed a rich vein of ore, which led to purchase of the mine by the Standard Company in 1877. People flocked to Bodie and transformed it from a town of a few dozen to a boomtown. In 1881, Bodie's "bust" began and the town's population declined drastically. The town's population continuing to decline until only a few remained. Mining officially ceased in Bodie in 1942, the final nail in the coffin for Bodie's township. Two large fires in 1892 and 1932 reduced the town's remaining structures down to less than 10% of the 2,000 structures that once stood.

DSC07857 Portmeirion Steampunk 2026 – Fashion Show Central Plaza

Rather than looking to the future, punkers or 'steamers' re-imagine the past. To what might have been if pressure powered technologies had flourished and been perfected. Back to a time when electricity was in its infancy, when women were militant and when respect was deserved through science, engineering and discovery (but no oil refinement or computating machines!) Instead, when coal fires produced steam to move big things like stylized iron and brass machines on land, at sea and in the air, aided by the invention of gravity-defying materials. All this topped off with a bit of Victorian art here and there.

Pictures taken at Portmeirion Village near Porthmadog in Wales, UK. Pictures were taken at a public event where it is assumed to be OK to publish on the internet. Permission was granted by the subjects for all posed photos. However, f anyone wants any photo removed from this set, please contact me, Bob, at dimparcio@protonmail quoting the file number eg DSC1234 and I will do so forthwith. Otherwise, if you like them and would like to download them, please do so, especially if it helps promote Steampunk.
