Anwar congratulates ‘friend’ Vijay after Indian actor takes helm as Tamil Nadu chief minister

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today congratulated Tamil actor C. Joseph Vijay for becoming the new chief minister of Tamil Nadu following his stunning political debut recently.

Hailing Vijay as his “friend”, Anwar said the 51-year-old actor’s Oru Viral Puratchi — or “one-finger revolution” in Tamil — is currently “on the cusp of creating history”.

The Oru Viral Puratchi refers to Vijay’s 2018 political blockbuster, Sarkar, which depicted Vijay as a prominent business magnate entering politics to take down a corrupt government.

“For many years, his adoring fans watched him defeat corrupt politicians and assorted villains within three hours, usually after a short interval.

“The people of Tamil Nadu have now entrusted Vijay with a responsibility far greater than any role performed on screen,” Anwar said in a Facebook post today.

Anwar also expressed hope to work closely with Vijay, saying that Malaysia and Tamil Nadu share deep historical, cultural and people-to-people ties across generations.

Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), won 108 seats and emerged as the single largest party in its first election attempt last month.

However, it fell short of the 118-mark required to form the government but managed to secure the support of 120 assemblymen with the help of the Indian National Congress and smaller, left-wing parties.

Vijay was sworn in as the state’s chief minister on Sunday, making him the first movie star to rule the southern Indian state in a decade.

EPF introduces i-Legasi, i-Emas and retirement goal calculator to help Malaysians plan for longer golden years

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) today introduced the i-Legasi facility, which allows members to transfer a portion of their retirement savings to the EPF accounts of immediate family members.

The option, however, will only be available to contributors aged 55 or 60 and above with savings exceeding the Adequate Savings level.

i-Legasi was among several measures rolled out by the EPF to help Malaysians prepare for longer retirement years as life expectancy continues to rise.

Other initiatives announced by the EPF include the rebranding of monthly EPF withdrawals for contributors aged 55 or 60 as i-Emas, as well as the introduction of a Retirement Goal Calculator.

EPF chief executive officer Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn said more than 21,000 members have opted for monthly withdrawals after reaching the age of 55 or 60, reflecting growing awareness of the need for a structured monthly income after retirement.

“Rather than withdrawing their savings in full upon reaching age 55/60, members can opt for automated monthly payments via i-Emas, allowing their remaining balance to continue earning annual dividends,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, the Retirement Goal Calculator is a new digital tool now available via the KWSP i-Akaun application to help contributors plan for retirement.

The calculator guides EPF members in estimating their future savings needs based on their lifestyle expectations and projected expenses.

Through personalised projections, members can assess their current financial position, identify potential savings gaps and better understand their level of retirement preparedness.

“Our goal is to help our members retire with confidence and dignity.

“By strengthening the financial resilience of the next generation through i-Legasi and encouraging sustainable habits with i-Emas, we are building a more secure future for our members,” Ahmad Zulqarnain added.

One year on, how Warisan KL has breathed new life back to Kuala Lumpur’s past — and what’s coming up next

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — When he launched Warisan KL in April 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was aiming to revitalise the heart and soul of Kuala Lumpur.

The national heritage and culture-based urban rejuvenation initiative embarked on an ambitious plan to restore 10 historical landmarks that had seen better days.

They are:

  1. Carcosa and Seri Negara
  2. The Kuala Lumpur Old Railway Station
  3. Dataran Merdeka heritage area, including Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad
  4. The Merdeka 118 precinct
  5. Petaling Street
  6. Masjid Jamek enclave
  7. Central Market
  8. Medan Pasar
  9. Dayabumi Complex & City Point Dayabumi
  10. Masjid Negara

One year on, Malay Mail takes a look at how much has been done and what is next.

What’s been completed so far?

Under Khazanah Nasional’s stewardship, Seri Negara and Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad reopened to the public recently after a 10-month round-the-clock restoration exercise.

Next up is the building adjacent to Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad which was the General Post Office; this is slated for reopening in the second quarter of 2026.

Other key works in the Dataran Merdeka area up for restoration are the Union Jack flagpole and the Queen Victoria Fountain. There is also the upgrading of the Dataran Merdeka carpark.

Meanwhile, Seri Negara is set to get a 600 metre-long canopy-style pedestrian bridge, linking it to the Perdana Botanical Gardens by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, the first phase of restoration works to preserve and reinstate the Old Railway Station’s iconic facade was completed on April 23.

Led by the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC), the second phase of restoration work is due for completion in 2027.

Another area that was restored and which has recently received a lot of attention is Jalan Sang Guna — historically known as Drury Lane or Madras Lane — which is between Jalan Tun HS Lee and the Petaling Street tourist belt.

Once a centre for Chinese theatrical performances and later a thriving wet market, the street fell into disuse with time as traders aged out and flash floods occured due to drainage failures.

Following efforts to rejuvenate the street under the Kuala Lumpur Creative and Cultural District (KLCCD) framework in 2019, Warisan KL has spruced up Jalan Sang Guna and reopened it to the public in January 2026.

Facades of shophouses dating back to the 1890s in the alley were restored and the drainage upgraded to curb flooding.

Storytelling panels and murals have also been installed along the alley, which now features new heritage-sensitive paving and a new timber archway at its Jalan Tun HS Lee entrance.

Jalan Sang Guna is also part of the Green Connector Network route threading through Petaling Street to form a continuous pedestrian corridor from Masjid Jamek to Kampung Attap under Warisan KL.

The second phase of Petaling Street’s facelift is already underway on the former Pasar Karat land, with street hawking improvements and further works to follow soon.

Similarly, infrastructure upgrades, enhanced accessibility and sensitive restoration works have also revitalised heritage landmarks like Central Market and Masjid Negara.

Creador Foundation, a Malaysian philanthropic organisation and a key partner in the Warisan KL initiative, is spearheading the restoration of nearly 54 heritage buildings in Medan Pasar.

Six buildings have been restored so far, with another eight fully restored by July 2026.

What’s coming up next?

Stadium Negara is set to undergo restoration later this year, following the successful restoration of Stadium Merdeka by PNB Merdeka Ventures that bagged the Unesco Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

Merdeka 118, the world’s second-tallest skyscraper, will also be hosting several key attractions starting August in conjunction with the Merdeka celebrations.

These attractions include 118 Mall, The View at 118 which will be South-east Asia's highest observation deck and the Merdeka Textile Museum.

Meanwhile, the Carcosa is set to become an eco-sanctuary hotel and is still in the planning phase.

At the Masjid Jamek enclave, Prasarana is currently developing a boundary plan for the LRT Masjid Jamek and Pasar Seni stations to ensure alignment with the heritage zones and pedestrian flow.

Big plans are also in the pipeline for the Dayabumi Complex, one of the earliest post-independence architectural marvels of the city, that sits at the intersection of some major heritage assets.

The complex’s former retail podium, City Point, will be reimagined into an open, pedestrian-oriented retail park so that the Dayabumi Complex can be cherished as an architectural heritage.

Indian superstar Vijay scores stunning election win, sparking ‘free tea’ celebration in Malaysia

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Indian star Vijay has scored a victory in his political debut, with his party emerging as the single largest force in the Tamil Nadu state elections on Monday.

The win sent waves of excitement through his fanbase, including in Malaysia, where a local tea shop celebrated by giving away hundreds of free drinks "out of sheer love for Vijay."

India’s Election Commission officially declared last night that Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), had won 108 seats.

The actor also secured personal victories in both constituencies he contested, Tiruchi East and Perambur.

While TVK emerged as the single-largest party, it fell 10 seats short of the 118 required for a simple majority in the 234-seat state legislature.

This leaves Vijay, whose full name is Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, needing to secure alliances to form the next government and potentially become the state's next chief minister.

His rivals, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), secured 59 and 47 seats respectively.

One of India's highest-paid actors, Vijay launched TVK in February 2024, trading his stardom for full-time politics after completing his final film.

His journey was not without challenges, including a tragic stampede at a rally last October and personal controversies.

Local celebrations and Malaysian ties

In Malaysia, the news was met with jubilation. Mohamed Rizwan Abdul Ghafoor Khan, co-founder of the popular Tea Kadai chain, took his celebration a step further.

After seeing Vijay’s commanding lead in the polls, his outlets in Penang and Kuala Lumpur offered free tea to all customers who presented a congratulatory poster of the actor.

They served nearly 400 cups of free tea from 4pm until midnight.

“We are doing this out of sheer love for Vijay sir,” Mohamed Rizwan told Malay Mail.

Vijay has long-standing ties to Malaysia, having filmed blockbusters like Kuruvi (2008) and Kaavalan (2011) here.

His Thalapathy Thiruvizha swansong concert and movie album launch at Bukit Jalil National Stadium last December drew a record-breaking crowd of nearly 80,000 people.
