Chiloe Wigeon pair

Chiloe Wigeon pair

I have only seen Chiloe Wigeon once, on the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. My sighting came on an excellent outing with guide Andy Pollard of Falklands Nature. The location was near the town of Stanley on East Falkland. This distinctive species is primarily found in southern South America, including as expected on Isla Grande de Chiloรฉ in Chile.
The sexes are similar, with males (as on the right in this image) being generally brighter and with a whiter face. The second part of the scientific name alludes to the whistling call, typical of the two other Wigeon species, American Wigeon and Eurasian Wigeon.
